REAR AXLE NOISE 460 280GE AUTO/ DIFF RATIO'S
Can anyone help, i have a bad whine from the rear axle, but i am breaking a 230ge auto, is the axle ratio the same as the 280?
There are several factors which dictate which differential/final drive ratios were used and you are right to be concerned as there are quite a wide variety. The easiest thing to do is look at the specification plate attached to the axle's differential housing. It is usually just to the right of the oil filler/level plug. Amongst the info stamped into it, you'll find the actual ratio.
Q
no the ratios are not the same. If your going to swap then swap both axles, it will be easier than swapping the diff.s

i'm not sure yet, the 230ge auto axle plates have fallen off on the one that i'm breaking, i also have a 1985 300gd 5 speed manual and it has the same ratio as the 280ge auto.i don't really want to swap both axles if i can get away with changing only one
