interior 'oil like' leak
Seems to be a slow but consistant oil/fluid leak coming down from somewhere on the inside of my G. Mostly arriving on the right hand side of the central console, next to where you can put your bits n pieces, also running down wires and onto the brake pedal! I really have no idea of its origin, could it have somthing to do with steering?
I have searched for any old posts on this, nearest thing I could find was Bill Moss's post that related to an Air Con problem, obviously I don't have AC.
Any help greatly appreciated,
Rob
bet you its coming up the speedo cable, does it smell like ep80? ie really foul?
i have seen this prob and it isnt that easy to solve.
regards mark
Mark is right, it is most probably oil from the transfer case which has past the seal of the speedometer cable. To check this you'll have to remove the rear cover of the speedo/rev counter console by removing the two screws (one in either side) for inspection.
Regards,
Thanks for the replies. What does the transfer case do? I think I'll have to take it to a garage to get it sorted but it would be great to have some more background info. RE smell, always seemed to have a bit of a niff going on especially when the heating is on. Does it need to be fixed as soon as poss do you think, thanks again.
No it does not need to be fixed immediately, i.e. the leak is unlikely to exhaust the oil in your transfer box.
Having said this, a check of the level of both 'boxes plus the front and rear diffs would not be counterproductive.....

The transfer case is the very heart of your G. It is a secondary two-speed gearbox, remotely located behind the main gearbox. It accepts the drive from the engine and primary gearbox via a short prop shaft. It then splits it and directs it backwards and forward via further propshafts to the axles respectively. The transfer case in your vehicle also provides the facility to engage rear only or four wheel drive. In later 463 (and the latest 461) models four wheel drive is permanent and, in these, the transfer case incorporates a lockable central differential unit.
