Hello All

How exactly do you remove the rear view inside mirror, there are no screws anywhere to be seen on the base of the stalk, is there a method to this madness?? Any pictures or instructions would be of great help for an early 463 interior, thanks.

Adrian.

removing the inside rear view mirror

Ade,
I read that it is slid off .It needs to be pulled briskly and it will come away. It is slid forwards or backwards (I can't remember)
I remember trying it on mine and it wouldn't come and I was afraid of breaking it.
I wonder why you want to remove it?

removing the inside rear view mirror

Well, now here is a funny story......

Last week I purchased a blaupunkt DAB aerial which sticks to the inside of your windscreen and I decided to install it last weekend onto my Blaupunkt DAB 54 radio. They recommend mounting the aerial at the top of the windscreen just behind the mirror and I wanted to hide all the cables behind the interior. To get the ceiling panel to come free you have to take the sun blinds off and I'm pretty sure the rear-view mirror aswell. So I pull the mirror off the pivot ball on the stalk which comes down from the roof, BIG MISTAKE!! You dont have a hope in hell of putting the mirror piece back onto this stalk pivot ball, it just refused to go on, no matter what angle I had it at. So I thought I would try and see how the the pivot hole works behind the mirror, the plastic was so hard I chipped the mirror when trying to get it out of the frame. So I'm getting a new one and need to know how to take the old one off, though when I get the new one I should hopefully be able to figure out how it releases(I hope). Other wise I'll have to go to an MB garage and ask them to look it up on there WIS. Ohh and to top it all of when trying to push the mirror piece back onto the stalk, I pushed it so hard that it touched the windscreen and the pressure cracked it, this being after I had already stuck the aerial to the windscreen which now has to be replaced!!! Lesson learnt, FUBAR.

My advise is smother ball end with vasaline, and heat up socket end with a hot air gun or a good hair dryer on high. Place mirror face down on a hard surface but with a folded tea towel or towel underneath it. That way you can hold heat gun in one hand without having to hold mirror, or get burnt and push socket on with other hand. You will need to give it some pressure but the tea towel will take up the pressure and support the glass at the same time.

Hope all goes well

They are designed to just pull out in case of accident while sailing through the windscreen
Vasaline may help but you should be able to just pop it back in place with a lot of force admittedly, if you start by pushing one side in as far as pos then just push like hell & it will go.

PP
Good to see someone else has a good taste in stereo's (i got the 54 as well).
i put mine up in the top right of the window, works OK but to be honest i'm finding DAB on the move worse than FM.
Let me know how you get on.......

The DAB 54 is a damn good radio, slotted straight in, the in-built amplifier makes the factory speakers sound so much better. Have also got a 1 GB SD card for it off e-buyer, nearly full of MP3's but with a bit of space left over so I can record anything I like. Radio 1 DAB reception seems to be excellent, can get a good signal all the time. Some others are good and some bad. Though I am tempted now to get the combo FM&AM/DAB aerial that goes on the roof as I now know how to get all the interior out, plus that is where my old FM/AM aerial is already connected. Purchased from bluespot.co.uk, dedicated blaupunkt people, plus the cheapest I could find!

Figured how to get the stalk of the mirror off though. It is held on by a spring clip that is double ended that runs from side to side. You simply need to pull it away from the windscreen with enough force to contract the spring. I used a heavy duty truck strap to do it, but a trouser belt would do, rotate the mirror piece so it is vertical and place the strap behind the lowest part of the stalk as far away from the connecting base/roof as possible. One end in each hand, then pull with a good force away from the windscreen perfectly horizontally and it will fly out. Easy when you know how.

Re: removing the inside rear view mirror

Dear G'ites,

I am presently having a hell of a time maikng my rear view mirror stay on.
I did a bit of a rework on the inner roor around the sun visor area recently. Fortunately the mirror popped out without hassle and with some help I was able to have it click back on.

Now the problem. Whenever I try to adjust the mirror, the entire unit just keep disengaing from the socket. It is becoming frustrating and annoying!

What do I do?

Hi Pink,

Totally sympathise!!

Did the exact same...including breaking the windscreen...what a pain in the bollox. The mirror came off so easily too, I never for one moment thought it would be so hard to replace.

Haven't yet got it sorted, will go with PP and the heat,Vaseline route methinks.... before I buy and fit a new screen.

Cheers

Guys thanks for the words of caution and wisdom, so anyone approaching a mirror job should do so very carefully. I think you might have saved someone a new windscreen!

Re: removing the inside rear view mirror

Never mind pulling it off thats the easy part. Its getting it back on. All i will say is i had to enlist the help of a bodybuilder friend and even he went a bit purple!  I think the chap that specified the thickness of the spring between the two pins was a sadist......

Re: removing the inside rear view mirror

Removing the rear view mirror is difficult, but the fitting of it, is even harder.

In order to remove the mirror,  firmly grasp the stalk as close to the base as manageable and assertively rock it towards you, i.e. straight-backwards of the vehicle.

Make sure your hands are not on the mirror otherwise, its the mirror that will pull off.

To re-fit the mirror, you need a wooden handled hammer.  The base of the mirror stalk has four spring loaded balls, two at either end.

Offer the further end of the stalk base into the holder in the roof, with that end inserted, take the end of the wood handle and rest that to the nearest side of the stalk base.  Trying to keep the stalk and hammer in line with one hand, use the other hand to support the hammer head and firmly push upwards, hopefully pushing-in  the stalk's base.

It is not easy to do this, for whilst pushing in, your are trying to keep the wood end to remain in line other wise the end will keep shifting and achieving a true line of force will be niggly.  If, and when the stalk base is clipped in, do the same with the hammer end, the other side of the stalk base and push that end in for good measure.  The base should be heard with a click in.

To reattached the mirror to the stalk end, I feel it would be easier to that with the stalk removed, rest the mirror on a flat surface, preferably on a piece of cloth.  The stalk can then be squarely pushed into the ball socket of the mirror with your body weight behind you.  The attachment of the stalk can be then carried out as described above.

Advise to thread number 8: make sure you hear the stalk base 'click' into the base receiver in the roof.  Lightly tap the stalk base ends in, at both ends.  Make sure you do not have any roof lining material in between the stalk base and receiver in the roof, if that click is not heard the ball have not gone past that lip to lock in the other side to secure its self.

Good luck,

SPAM SPAM SPAM Someone please block that user..

For a 1988 460 rear view mirror..

To refit my review mirror.. I cut  a 1" x 3/4" notch into the end of a 2"x2"x3" bit of timber. This then sits either side of the mirror stalk and you can now use 4lbs club hammer on the end of the wood without the risk of breaking windscreen.

To remove ended up using screwdriver to prise it as it is really tight.. did damage paint a little but not noticable.
