peter, i am replying to your post in a new topic as i am being locked out in responding to the one below- Veg oil is fine in most diesels but there are parameters of sensible use- firstly you invalidate any warranty on a new car if you use more than 5%- so veg oil will be blamed for wheel bearing failure if you use it in a new car! The main problem with veg oil is its viscosity, particularly when cold. it affects the injection pump and then the injectors if too thick ie cold engine. If you put 100% veg oil in to a cold engine then it will not atomise very well through the injectors and you foul the piston, put your piston rings at risk and possibly end up witrh veg oil in your lube oil- all most undesirable- however warm veg oil is a great fuel with better lubricity and in the case of used cooking oil a higher energy density - more power and the longwer your piston stroke the better. The safeset way to use the fuel is a twin tank system to start up on mineral diesel then sweitch to veg oil when warm (+ a heat exchanger) or use it in blends with mineral diesel- bosch pumps are particularly good with veg oil and inclusion at 50-75% shoud l be no problem taking account of ambient temperature.

Are you saying up to 75% veg oil with fossil diesel? At what sort of temperatures would you recommend what percentages? Also what oil do you find works best?

I've also heard about people saying to cut it with ethanol (i think) or something along those lines.

How can one get rid of or at least diminish the chip shop smell coming from your tail pipes?

alternative fuels(diesle)

so vegy oil, what about sunflower oil? is it the same?
so to get its viscosity stable & to burn, why not mix approx 80/20% parafin or 10/20% petrol..............what a saving
any body clued up...cmon guys

veg oil means just that- derived from vegetable source, be it sunflower, rapeseed ,soya hemp etc etc, as long as it is liquid at the time of use -our used cooking oil is a veritable soup of oils of all descriptions.

ok, so all veggy is veggy, lust different taste.
so veg oil= 45p/ litre + cerosine= 43p/litre......... together 44p per litre fuel niiiiice
any views guys.........let us know

not exactly, as the chancellor wants 27.1p litre ,plus vat( on the duty and the fuel!)
so 43p plus 27.1p plus 12.25p - thats 82.35 p per litre of veg oil, and as for the kerosene,- I dont think we better go there.

Veg fuel

So with my 1984 model, I just add 50% of veg oil and 50% of diesel and off I go :?:
So What do you recon to my Mercedes 308 van (1992) same engines I think,
should work as well
Or is it best to mix any thing else, on certain times?

you will be fine at up to 75%veg oil in both vehicles, but reduce the concentration to 50% as the temperature drops. as a guide go to 50% when day temps stay below 10c for prolonged periods- appologies for not responding sooner, cheers richard.

Re: Veg oil fuel

Guys Advise me!!

I have a 300GD 1985.
Do i have to buy normal Veg oil off the shelf used for cooking??
I live in Pakistan, the price of Veg cooking oil is almost close to diesel, will it help in consumption, to economise.
Kindly advise suitable ratio as temp are higher.

if the prices are so similar I don't think you'll get much benefit

Re: Veg oil fuel

you may get better economy- as for rate, 100% could be used, but i would use fuel system cleaning additive( if you can get hold of one,) with a recommendation for use in diesels. Used cooking oil is better still as it has a higher energy density, and should be all but free.

In what way is used cooking oil better? Economy? Performance?

Can used cooking oil just be filtered and used?

How fine a filter is needed?

Thanks.

Re: Veg oil fuel

you get better economy, better torque and smoother running. People who use our fuel oftern comment that when they occasionally have to fill with mineral diesel , it seems to dissapear in no time.
We filter to 5 microns- to do this you must first have clear oil ( and clear at the temperature you wish to use it add i might add!), then filter it. We use a standard hydraulic oil filter element. Our current blend (end march) is a 50/50 mineral diesel/veg oil mix, and it has performed very well through the winter months with several -6 mornings , but will increase to a 40min/ 60veg mix by late April.
We are currently rigging up a large diesel generator with suitable test equipment to be able to substatiate our claims for our fuel, and will post any interesting results as and when they become available.
My G has now been a full year on the fuel and have had no problems at all- it stills starts fine, runs smoothly and smokes far less thanks to the cleaning properties of our fuel additive. We have a whole host of other 3 pointed star vehicles using it: several sprinters, 250E,300E,190D,E320,V220 all doing fine!

Re: Veg oil fuel

re fuel, i believe new or waste veg oil has no duty breaks at all, its still 47 per litre.
the only way to get a break is to use the veg oil to make bio diesel, basiclly anesterification process, and then you pay just 27 per litre.
unless he changed this in the recent budget, some hope!!!!

Re: Veg oil fuel

no that is not quite the situation- there is currently discussion amongst 'stakeholders' as to what constitutes a' bio fuel'. There is a German standard for pure plant oil fuels and we hope to get this recognised and adopted by this government. Our process produces a fuel that meets or exceeds these criteria. It will be a very sad day if this government do not back the most enviromentally efficient and best performing biofuel of the whole bunch, just from pressure from the transesterifiers (RME) and the greed of the chancellor. At present there is a standoff and we and others doing a similar process are still at the 27.1ppl duty rate.
Quite honestly the RME route is a complete mystery to me. Why on earth make gallons of RME to include at a rate of 5% with diesel? you could put 5% orange squash in diesel!!!! I do not know of any current diesel that wont run on 25% veg oil so why on earth go through the noxious and wasteful transesterification process, to make an inferior fuel ? We should look long and hard at what the Germans have been doing for years ,using pure plant oils to best effect, and making most efficient use of this limited resource. Big business has got its finger in the pie and pushing the industry down a wholly inappropriate path- Follow the Germans I say, drive mercedes and use straight veg oil!

Re: Veg oil fuel

Could you tell me how do I go about to pay the 27p/l and to who? I would like to start using veg oil, but do not wish to be illegal in any way. Can I buy ready mixed fuel from somewhere? I would like to test veg oil as an alternative for my trip through Africa, I no Tanzania produce masses of peanuts, maybe I can run on peanut oil when going through there.

Re: Veg oil fuel

Visit the Custom and Excise website and download a form - I can't remember the exact form number but I think the site in the last post explains which one.

You need to declare what fuel you are using and figure out the tax rate and send the appropriate amount in.
