Do you have a front propshaft on you truck :?: The symptons you give are when you remove front propshaft.

yes it does have its propshaft connected, but i have a feeling all is not well in the transfer box, and i dont think 4wd is engaging correctly- however the front propshaft rotates freely when 4wd is not engaged and locks up when engaged( ie turning the shaft by hand from under the vehicle) so it does appear to engage- however when climbing a bank the rear wheels spin and front wheels dont seem to be contributing much until front diff is engaged, then it grips. its all a bit confusing, but i am interested in your comment abouit the propshaft being disconnected- can you please elaborate on this. thankyou Richard.

You should only be able to turn front shaft freely when it is in rear wheel drive with the front wheel jacked up. I,e the shaft should not turn unless you jack up one wheel at front and then when you engage 4wd then it should lock up. To check that the front is working you should drive on a hard surface and engage front diff lock (engage 4wd) if its very hard to steer then you know you have drive and diff locks are working. However if you can steer without to much trouble then you could have a faulty diff actuator or a broken half shaft.

The speedo drive works from the front drive shaft in Transfer box, so if you disconnectd front prop the flange/shaft will not spin unless you engage 4wd. if you have no drive on front unless you engage diff you could have a broken half shaft, you need to jack car up on all fours, engage 4wd and see if the one front spins then engage front diff and see if both wheels spin if only one spins then you have a broken halfshaft .
