Having previously been an erm, ahem, (whispers) landrover owner  , and being completly fed up with the aforementioned vehicles, I am now looking to by a g wagen. I have a few questions. I'm looking at an old (82) 300 series diesel with a 4 speed box, what sort of MPG can I expect? Am I correct in thinking that all g wagens are permanent 4wheel drive with all 3 diffs lockable? What are spares prices and availability like? What can I expect to pay for a secondhand/recon gearbox? I've heard rumours, probably from evil landy owners, that g wagens aren't as good off road, anyone like to comment?

Thanks for your time guys, no doubt I'll have more stoopid questions in the future.

I had a 1984 300 GD five speeder which over 8 years of ownership turned 22.17 mpg doing everything that you would normally do with a GWagen, i.e. school run, shopping, commuting, city driving, off road, frog hunting and the ocassional blast in the Nürburgring. Deduct 10% for a four speeder, i.e. 20 mpg. But mine was in tip-top mechanical condition.

No, you are wrong. W460 model (1979 to 1990) is a rear wheel drive with connectable front axle and manually operated front- and rear axle diff locks. W463 (1991 to current) is permanent 4wd, with vacuum/hydraulically operated diff locks in both axles plus the one in the transferbox. In practical terms both are endowed with the same outstanding off-road capability.

Spare prices are expensive but availability is second to none. Only interior trim might not be available new for older models but it can be found second hand in decent nick.

A factory exchange gearbox can be had for some 2,000 pounds, which can be more than the market value of the car. But a decent second hand one can be bought for little money.

Ha, ha, ho, ho. There are no evil landy owners, just bloody ignorant or else they would not buy that dreadful truck. I am not going to comment on the substance of your question but rather ask you another one.... how many times have you come across in any Land Rover Owners' forum of somebody saying that he is fed up of his GWagen and that he's considering buying a Land Rover product?

.... and you are welcome.

I have a 1988 swb 300GD 5-speed. It is totally unmodified except for a set of 31" BFG MT tyres. It is a superb green laning tool. All the things you need (diff locks, steering and tank guards, axle breathers, recovery points) all come as standard, whereas a Defender owner has to fit them as accessories. The G will go anywhere a Defender will go. Just stay away from bogs, cos it'll sink like a stone. The 5-cylinder diesel does lack torque compared with a LR Tdi unit, but that just means I have to use first gear low, when they might get away with 2nd Low. All the Landy owners I know never fail to be impressed by the G's ability and reliability, they just don't like everyone to know.

I have had most 4x4s on the market and guess what, I shant be having anymore.Ive got 3 G wagens, what does that tell you. I have a winch challenge g wagen that cost me £4000 including winches. I have never broken a thing. Did an event in a £30,000 fully prepard 90 last year, broke 3 halfshatfs in 20 minutes.

Only down side is they are heavy and will sink in bog, but if you comes across some bog, get out and jump in a suzki jeep, youll skip across it.

To be fair you cant expect a naturally aspirated diesel engine to perform as good as a turbo diesel, take a turbo off any diesel and you'll have the same result unless it a monster V8 6.3lts chevvy.

The best place to look for engines is maybe www.g-special.nl. Or try for a 290TD from 312 spinter van. I doubt if you will find a 350td a very common engine as it was only used in the G I beleive

It's also used in the W140 S350TD. The 300 turbodiesel from the W124 range is a popular choice here in Norway.

Sorry Agus but the 300 GE was no longer made in LHD in 1994 and in RHD in 1996 so yours cannot possible be a 1998 car.

Can you please check and advise?
