Fancy a new G wagon!!!!
If you want to buy a new G wagen from europe but don't want to pay the VAT when you bring it into the uk then Lease it for 6 months from the garage and then buy it of them after 6 months and you dont have to pay the VAT. If your self employed you can offset the lease against your tax. Worth thikning about
Sounds interesting :) , where is the best (i guess i mean cheapest) place to buy one & what sort of money are they?
Holland might be the best place.
From £ 32,000 + VAT.
Cheers
I probably will come to the same conclusion that i always do with new cars but i might just investigate the VAT & tax implications a bit further on this :)
The rules on vat are quite clear, tax and duty on goods purchased are payable at the rate of the EU country in which you buy them and payable there, If you are vat registered the tax and duty is payable in the country to which you are registered, with the exception of motor vehicles, they are taxable at the rate applied in you country of residence within the EU, where ever you use the vehicle you will have to register it where ever you register it you will have to register as a resident as soon as you become a resident you will be liable for the vat.
In Holland Mercedes are taxed as a luxury vehicle, so the base price is kept low, which is why they are attractive to" export" to the UK, but if you register it in Holland you will pay luxury tax 40% and vat 19%.
Good luck with your search for a cheap G. reading the news from Graz on the US site your best bet is some ones back garden in Graz. but you have to have it one part at a time.
There is always a catch, i will keep digging
I've gone away from this idea again now, i wish i would stop listening to people telling me that if buy a new motor for work they effectivly cost you nothing after so many years. If you are going to buy a new car anyway you can write off a large sum from your tax liability each year but you still pay for it in the long run.
My next idea is to convert a deisel LWB model into a van & pay for its restoration, this way i can claim back the whole amount of any work done for each year.
I guess 20-25 MPG is achievable with a deisel?
Sorry Ian, the vat free purchase method yopu describe applies to every thing except motor vehicles, railway locomotives and airoplanes.
The other method of converting your vehicle toa van was scrapped in Benelux since Jan 1 2005

Well, yes and no.
There is no such thing as a "legal" VAT free purchase within the EU. For everything, if you can provide the vendor with a valid VAT number, he will issue the invoice without VAT. Then you bring the item to the UK and it is your legal obligation to raise a self-invoice and pay 17.5% of the invoice amount to Mr Gordon Brown, who would then let you deduct that same amount paid as input VAT. Problem is that cheeky people like our Mr Perfect forget doing this.... as for motor vehicles, boats, railway locomotives and airoplanes it is very difficult to forget because you have to register the car in the UK and for this you need to pay the VAT.
If you are an individual and cannot provide the vendor with a valid VAT number then you will be charged local VAT, except for motor vehicles, boats, railway locomotives and airoplanes where the same rules as above apply.
Cheers

The only vat free system is if the item is vat free in your country but not in the country of purchase and you are vat registered.
to get out of paying high luxury tax on g wagens you black out the rear windows and remove rear seats to show it is not capable of carrying more than 2 people, same in Belgium.
