Hi

Just wondering if anyone has come across this before. When I press switch for rear wash/wipe the front wiper gives a few sweeps as well. Not a problem if I remember to spray water on front window first, but otherwise results in wiper dragging over a dry screen and making my letahrgic wiper motor and worn spindles groan!. Seem to remember reading that same washer pump used for back and front, just  rotates in opposite direction. Is there a relay or diode that could be blown allowing current return to front wiper, or maybe a bad earth? 1994 463 300d

Re: Wiper Gremlins

This has been discussed previously and quite a number of 463 owners said that they experience a similar problem. To date I have never read of a solution. Yes the washer rotates both ways providing pressure to front and rear. My '92 used to do it

My 1991 463 also does  this, but not every time, you could just wet screen with washers before pressing switch?

Thanks for reply. Might try fitting diode to feed from front washer switch and see if this cures problem.

Re: Wiper Gremlins

My 1989 W40 has wiper problems too. Not sure how to fix it.

The intermittent setting on the front wiper no long works and goes at a faster pace and after spraying water on the windscreen the wipers will get stuck in the middle of the screen instead of returning to their starting position.

Re: Wiper Gremlins

I had this issue on 91 463 300d. Cleaned all earthing points and replaced out both relays. The relays are fairly cheap to buy, I got mine on some German web site for 15 euro each and arrived within 2 days. There are two seperate wiper relays located behind the fuse board under the passenger side. The relays are identical, (at least on mine) one for front and one for back. The actual pin connections are not great - make sure that they are fully home in the connectors.

Don't underestimated cleaning the earthing points - this does lead to intermittent faults as you describe. Wiper motor is under the hood next to the air intake and connectors can be dirty if not covered. I'd start with this first. If still no joy, replace both relays.

Also, I recall that the wiper spindle assembly does require oil / greasing annually.

Best to luck

Derek

Re: Wiper Gremlins

Earthing cannot be underestimated - MB Salisbury replaced Xenon bulbs on my E430 & very nearly the "starter"  -  MB Dorchester fixed the recurrent failure by cleaning the earth screw free of charge.  Anyone want the full headlight set from the car - which has now been scrapped?!  I have seen a hideous G converted to them!
