Wing Mirrors
I finally decided to buy two new wing mirrors (not cheap) for my 1991 463. When they arrived there was an immediate problem. The 3 holes on the 463 doors are much smaller than the mirror mounting plates. Is there some kind of spacer that should have been supplied because Mercedes are currently confused despite being supplied the VIN number.
Cheers in advance for any ideas.
There is a plastic spacer that sits between. but if you upgraded from the old standard 463 units to the ones with indicators in you will have to drill out the holes a little as the casting is different and i suggest you do not attempt to seperate the mount from the mirror as it is spring loaded and you wont get them back together.
in both instances the spacer pad part number is: A4638110096
thanks
yes always use a spacer!!
oh and as a hint put some waxoil inside the mount casting to help prevent corrosion in the long run.
I got a standard no-indicator 463 mirror off ebay (practically new a few years back) and needed to widen the holes slightly to fit it. I think they made them bigger sometime after 1991, my original model year.
Hi
The advice given seems correct about the spacer....
....however i have one niggle. I really need you VIN NO to check if you want to PM me it, but from your post
it seems you have purchased the mirrors from MB. Was this in the UK? I have access to MBUK data and the mirrors
that i have worked out the part numbers for to be correct for an early 463, MBUK have not sold in over 12 months.
This asks the question what have they sold you? Like i say without a VIN NO i cant be sure. If you send me it i can check
it for you today. I am laid out on my bed with 3 herniated discs in my back and need something to do to occupy my time!!!
Hope this helps
Thanks

Hi
Yep they should be the right ones. They are different from the ones i had worked out. You should have part numbers A463 810 02 16 LEFT and A463 810 03 16 RIGHT. Are they really £317.00 each plus vat?!!!! The "spacer" i think is actually just a rubber seal or pad. MB Germany have them in stock at £4.10 each plus vat. I guess you should have taken these off your old ones when you stripped them, to clarify they will almost certainly have the part number on them. Also i would think the old and new mirrors will have stickers on the inside of the mount plate with the part numbers on. I think the next course of action is to check that the numbers above are the same as on your invoice from the dealer, then check they are the same as the big square ticket on the box the part came in (4" approx) which is MBUK's picking ticket and is probably yellow but maybe white and then check the smaller (3"x1) blue and white sticker has the same number on it, this is MB Germany's packing ticket, then finally check the part number on the part itself. If these are all the same then you should be OK. If not you might have a picking or packing error some where in the process(not uncommon).
If the old part you have taken off does have a sticker with a number on it and it is different to the supplied one then mail me back and i will try to see what the difference is or if it superceeds to the same mirror or a different one, or if EPC says you require any other parts to make it fit.
Hope this helps even if it has not even answered your original question!!!
Thanks
Gav
Hi Grant
I assume all the part numbers checked out OK then, and you have what you ordered and been charged for?
I will have another dig around on the MB WIS and see if i can find anything.

Hi
That sounds like complete b******s!!!
MB didn't get where they are today by running their business the way Colin Chapman ran his!!!
That sounds like the dealer has got fed up with you hassling him and fobbed you off. I would ask for it in writing from MB or at least a copy of the email. If it is true it will be in your hands in 24hrs. The dealer will just give you it to passify you again.
MB hardly ever give any advice these days that is not in some written form. Verbal just does not satify the legal people when the brown stuff hits the fan!! As trivial as this seems if you have this work done and 500 miles later the mirror falls of and decapitates a passing pedestrian, i know i would have liked it in writing!! I am certainly not an Ambulance chaser but there are far too many out there to take chances, and you see stranger things happen every day. (Note to self: New Years Resolution No1: I must stop my YouTube addiction)
P.S. Did all the part numbers on the Invoice / Box / Parts stack up to be right then?
Merry Xmas
Gav this does sound like MB, there are allot of old parts that have been discontinued as there is another that can be used for the application! Clearly they are cutting down on manufacturing of many old parts when one will do for all! For example 211 rear bumpers and 163 bonnets!!
How much do the holes need to be enlarged?
Thanks for your prompt reply. These were standard mirrors with no indicators. Is the spacer still necessary then?
