Windshield trouble... Please help!
Good afternoon all!!
My 300gd restoration is well under way (pics to come), but I've hit a problem, there is a lot of rotten metal on the base of the exterior windshield frame part number 5, and number 8 the internal frame is basically gone...
Before I go to a metal worker for fabrication, I just wanted to find out if anybody on here had any of these items for sale or knows of anywhere online that I can get them? If anyone has had theirs fabricated and and a good job was made of it could they maybe send me the workers number?
Kindest regards
Pete
Hi Pete
Not a solution, but might help you narrow things down! I have just finished a big restoration job on a 300GD and at one point it looked like I needed these parts (turned out not too - long story) anyway we got as far as asking Merc (Poole) for a cost and availability which came back at something like £500 and they were on back order.
Back order in Merc parts stands for waiting until we get enough orders to get our guys in Hamburg hammering the sheet metal (I need a part on back order and it took 6 months, every 2 weeks we would get an update to say it would be available in another 2 weeks)
I do recollect a forum reply about someone getting a windscreen scuttle fabricated, so it is possible. Also Guido who sells through the German EBay might be a good source of info as he seems to have a lot of stuff - I will try to get his link for you.
Good luck and if I get anything more useful I will get back to you

Hi Pete
I think you will have some local fabrication to do even if you get the new part as most areas do not rust out in line with the edge of a panel...
Hi Peter
Can't comment on the suitability of the 463 part, but there are much wiser heads on here who might be able to. My recollection was it was the internal part that was the major trouble as it was far more complicated.
You might want to try Guido Matthes who does loads of G parts on German Ebay. His mail is ebay@industrytools.de
His english is good as is his understanding of parts. I think the outer scuttle is very 'fabricatable' but Fixwing, who has already chipped in is better placed than me to comment on that.
Appols I can't help more on the part compatibility. They look the same, but it might be the internal part is the problem due to changes in dash fixing etc - but I don't know

I bought the inner section from the dealer (dashboard out job) and then got a section of L shaped steel in 0.8mm folded up by metal fabricator with a press that was wider than the windscreen; a little trim with multiple cuts let it curve up the sides. My rust had not really got beyond the rubber so all welds were hidden under it. It would not be so hard to repair the flat sections as long as you keep the heat out to avoid distortion. Just make sure you measure both the size of the steel at the inner lip and the outer shoulder in both directions before you start so that the glass will still fit.
Going by part numbers, the answer would be the W463 windscreen panel will not fit the W460.
Part number for the 460's is: A 460 670 33 02,
Part number you have located is: A 463 670 06 02.
You could ask of your local dealer to do a search in Europe to see if any dealer there, carries one in stock.
Alternatively, chop one off a scraped vehicle. Any photos to see and appreciate how rotten your's is?
Cheers,

Shows that 460 part is about £370.
The inner section was not so bad .. about £45 I think .. I would be tempted to remove dash .. replace inner section so you now have a line to follow (measured dims for windscreen opening first) .. then
1/ try and get one off a breaker.. but these are common parts to fail so unlikely
2/ start fabricating.. mostly flat plate.
3/ open your wallet wide..
Which ever way you go watch out for the wiring at the passenger side .. it goes to interior lights and the rear windscreen washer if fitted. Also note you have some fair rust inside so need to treat that before your weld over new material.. ideally spot sand blaster, rust killer, zinc rich primer, 2 part epoxy paint.. I needle gun everything now but really need a big compressor for sand blaster.
Forum search on "windscreen"

Humm.. seems all photos were wiped when website went down... so here is a photo or two to show inner panel but not going to give you great hope!
This lot's panels were not rated by users and have no windscreen; http://www.autoblechteile.de/index.php?cPath=37_38
Hi
Both the part numbers for the W460 and W463 screens are the same..
W460 outer frame item 5 on EPC Part number A460 670 33 02 £642+vat
MB Germany have stock and only other european dealers to have stock are in Germany
W460 inner piece item 8 on EPC Part number A460 671 07 29 £44.70+vat
MB Germany have stock
W463 outer frame item 8 on EPC Part number A463 671 07 29 £78.50+vat ??!!!???
MB Germany have stock
W463 inner piece item 11 on EPC Part number A463 670 04 02 No Longer Available
W463 inner and outer item 5 on EPC Part number A463 670 06 02 £377+vat
MB Germany have stock
Not sure if this helps the screen cut out must be the same but the outer profile must be different, cant believe the W463 outer is £78.50
and the W460 is £642 ??!!?? It dont make sense.
But at least they are available in Germany
I have just used two sample chassis numbers but could double check with your chassis number if you PM me it.
I am assuming it is RHD as LHD are different for the outer of the W460 and inner of the W463?

Why don’t you just cut it out and plate it with flat steel on the interior, for the window surround exterior that has the pressed shape in it get a door from a van like a sprinter and use the shape in the panel where a window might go if it was a minibus and cut that out and weld it in as the exterior panel! Don’t know if that makes sense but it would beat paying £600 for a new one that will take 16 weeks to get to you! My last 460 was like this never repaired it though!
Hi Simon
Thank you for your help!
I have just found one available in America but it is for a 2002-2005 G-Wagon (A463), PART#: A463 670 06 02.
Do you have any idea if it will still fit a W460 86 shell and if the windscreen shape is the same?
Kindest wishes
Pete
