Wheezing air horn?
Ah, old cars and the list of jobs that need attending... Do like the air horn but it now only manages a low level wheeze (if that) - can I fix/replace the compressor (does perhaps anyone have a spare kicking around?) or is it just easier to buy a standard car horn? Not worried about playing dukes of Hazard (or neceassrily am I fixated with keeping it all MB original, just functional), just MOT.
Cheers,
Stewart
Standard Hella hi/lo horn set is about £25-£30 available from most factors.
If you wanted to be heard you could try a Supertone - MB Option and VERY loud :D
Check the pipework from the compressor to the horns, you will need to address any leak issues. If the compressor is slow, keep using it until, and if the compressor speeds ups. As with normal horns, lack of use can muffle them.
Go back to the original 2 tone MB fitment.
The couple of air horns I have worked with were all Italian cheap low pressure die moulded aluminum. The aluminium pump has steel vanes and basically turns into a rust ball pretty quickly unless regreased/used/loved etc. Normal Italian stuff.. bit like cooker hoods.. pretty, cheap, not worth rebuilding (I do have a '70 Italian car.. so I can say that!.. although that is old school Rolls like quality Lancia).
My horn gets used twice a year.. once to check for MOT.. second time for the MOT. Bought a new one to get my G back to the hi/low pair from MB and had to redo the wiring loom as it has spades not post+ring ends but the price was not bad (£18-22? for one). Another car I got a set off a Golf/Passat for about £18 delivered used off ebay which are at least German quality but not up with the G volume. Note that the mounting strip on these horns is part of the the hole (several thin plates).
I had air horns once. Drove up a river, after which they gargled for a couple of months then groaned like an aging hippo with wind. The compressor was o.k but the diaphragm in the horn didn't like the immersion much. If you go to Donnington Park services you can get a couple of those metre long chrome trumpet things. Mount a couple of those on the roof and people will think the Canadian Pacific is routed down the M1
My only concern is then that these horns are more powerful then my truck - perhaps if I turn it round it could act as an extra 'jet' - might even be able to get me up some of the hills in Sheffield!?!
