Hi, I'm quite new here and will be picking up a G soon. It's pretty mint and I'll post some pics later.....
I own a couple of Mercs with the 280 M110  twin cam engine. Ones a 72 car the other is a w123 280TE estate.
I wanted to know what Mercedes road cars used the same engine as the other G's? Are they same or was the camshaft/timing torque altered  for use  in the G. It might be a geeky questions so if no one knows that's ok.
I'm not considering an engine swap but for example the Eighties SEC two door models (a great car) used 4.2, 5.0 and 5.6 litre engines. I think they were all V8's. They are w124 or w126 series I think. Will these engines fit 460 or 463 G models? Has it been done?

Re: What Merc Road car Petrol engines were used in G-Wagons

Hello montreal,

Generally speaking, M/Benz have used engines from saloon cars in G-Wagens.  I have not compared the modern generation of engines but speaking of the older engines like OM110 used in the 280 GE, OM 102 and OM115 used in the 230 GE, OM617 used in the 300GD (W460), OM 103 used in the 300 GE and OM 602 used in the 300 GD (W463); all these engines are from saloons, but when applied to the G-Wagens, the compression ratio is marginally reduced changing the torque curves, this is done to cope with off-roading conditions where it is necessary to have the torque at the lower end.

People have transplanted engines directly from saloons to the G-Wagen largely due to the vehicle not spending time off-road comparatively, hence no difference is actually noticed.

On the subject of the V8's; these modifications have been done also.  The task is not convenient, lots of modifications need to be done, one for instance, is the brake servo has to be moved more to the right (viewing from the rear of vehicle, looking forwards), the steering column has to be fabricated to be thinner so not to foul with the engine etc, etc...  Tony Baskill has done a V8 conversion, he has the expertise in this area, any questions, should you need to ask, could be put to him.

Cheers,

V8's a common conversion; some issues of gearing/axle ratios but relatively straightforward, there were a few specially commissioned factory V8 versions of lwb 460's for a horse racing Arab Sheik. There was an article on one of these cars in an earlyish edition of the G-Wizz magazine.
