All,

Please can anyone tell me what the highlighted reservoir is for? It is tucked in behind the coolant reservoir.

I ask as the cap is damaged and not sealing, so need to know if a replacement is urgently required.

thanks Alex

Diff Locks, I think - my cap is the same - cracked from previous over tightening.

My concern is that the diff lock fluid reacts with the moisture in the air detrimentally, like I believe brake fluid does....

Hi Al

Difflocks it is and Yes the fluid absorbs moisture 24/7 which settles in the difflock rams ( lowest point) and corrodes them internally

sample the fluid at the nipples on the rams

if black or cloudy corrosion is present and may justify replacing the rams.

hydraulic pressure will push the ram into the engaged position but the return spring inside the ram is to weak to disengage the pawl if there is any internal corrosion

The phrase 'use them or lose them' is very apt as far as difflocks are concerned.

Re: What is this for??

Thanks.

It sounds like I should check the fluid at the ram nipples before testing if the diff locks still work, last time I checked was 6  months ago.....

I have a couple of questions.

In fear of asking the obvious, were exactly do I find the ram nipples? down on the transfer case somewhere? and I assume there will be three rams for the three dif locks?

and what fluid should be used in the system?

regards Alex

Re: What is this for??

Normal Brake Fluild is fine DOT4 for Diff locks, you could open the bleed nipple ( Axle end) with a good quality ring spanner on the Diff lock slave cylinders and change fluid. Though probably wise to soak for 24 hrs in penetrating oil first, when you engage diff locks  fluid should come through bleed nipple under pressure? So make sure you keep fluid topped up in reservoir.

Both axles have rams (front & rear) but the 3rd difflock is inside the transferbox.
