 Good Day
Does anybody have a good drag link, at least thats what I think it is called. Its the bar accross the vehicle just behind the front wheels.
I have  a 1989 300 GDS. If you can help please ring on 07977 599218, Regards Vic.

Re: Wanted Drag Link

Hi Vic B
most steering components are only removed when unserviceable..chances of a good one off a breaker are remote ..new from MB only( crafted item) around GBP 190... just quote your vin/chassis number when ordering..takes about 5 days from Germany...

Re: Wanted Drag Link

It's the steering damper.  One of the few things I've done myself (a few years back) - was about £130 then, new from Merc and took 10 mins to replace - no jack needed, just a torque wrench or a good guessitmate to tighten up the fixing nut/bolt.
Without it, my 460 developed severe wheel wobble on slight bends, despite wheel balancing being fine tuned.  Is fine now.

Re: Wanted Drag Link

The steering damper and draglink are two completely different things. From Vics description he is looking for a draglink.

Re: Wanted Drag Link

I think you are probably correct, since the operative word was 'bar' and not hydraulic damper thingy which is right behind it!   If he bent that bar, he probably destoyed the damper too ;)

Re: Wanted Drag Link

Bizarrely, I took a look at mine and both rubber gaiters are on their way out, so I think I'll need a Drag Link too.

Seems like the drag bar comes with the ball joints fitted to them, rather than just being able to replace the ball joints themselves.  Is that correct?

Its the bar 'in front' of the front axle (not behind) and goes from the steering box arm to the nearside front left wheel.

I am going to check for a stamped on part number to check which I have (460 1987)

Re: Wanted Drag Link

Hi JD
the one behind the axle is called the tie rod and the one in front of the axle the drag link ...both have one end that can be replaced the other  end is swaged into the tube  split gaiters are an MOT failure item      quote the vin /chassis number when ordering as some are longer than others and RHD / LHD are different ..prices around GBP 200 each...

Re: Wanted Drag Link

OK.  MB want about £249+VAT (so £300) for the Drag Link and there are 3 variants.
I think mine is like this:picture
There are MB dealers in the US here which are about £200-220 - anyone used them for parts??

I figure its better to try to get a bit of discount and get it locally (carbon footprint and all that!).   Plus you have to pay shipping and probably customs tax too.
Always seems bonkers that new MB parts from USA are cheaper though.

The kinked but straight style drag link can be seen here: http://fourbyfourclub.com/W460SuspensionParts/W460SteeringLink.htm

And the deadstraight one here:

Its slightly annoying because other Merc drag links are only £100.

Re: Wanted Drag Link

Hi JD, I think you are confusing a draglink with a tiebar or steering link.

This is a tiebar and sits behind the axle nad has the steering damper attached to it.

This is the draglink and sits in front of the axle and attaches to the pitman arm on the steering box.
