Hi all,

I have been looking for one of these:

Now I assumed that all W460's had these but apparently not.  This one is fitted to my 1988 230GE which was a Japanese import into Australia, originally coming from the UK.  So I am wondering if this a UK-only fitment as it was not fitted to German or US G's.

I cannot find it in the EPC.

I have out a request in the classified ads for one but if anyone has any info on these plates it would be helpful.

thanks,

Graham.

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

Just found that a friend has one on his G, which has Canadian, Japanese and Australian locations under its belt.  So its not a one-off on my G created by a previous owner.

I removed it to see if there were any identifying marks underneath and there were none.  An opportunity to polish it up and take some fancy photos.  I reckon it looks great, very well made.  As yet I dont know the source but I assume it was a Japanese arm of Mercedes (even though its in English)

A puzzle.

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

Unless my mind is going cuckoo, I am sure in the very early W460s' there used to be a larger rectangular plate of the transfer box gear map in Black and silver stuck on the consol between the transfer gear and gearbox lever.

This was an original Mercedes Benz sticker plate which I cannot find on the EPC either, could be they have stopped producing it.

I have tried to find images of the plate but had no sucess. I think an image of it is shown in an owners manual if one has access to it.

rakesh , i have one . no mention of the diff locks sadly but this is the only plate i have ever seen, this nice red/gold one must of been fitted by a dealer chain for english speaking customers / nice plate though /there are companies that can do a repro of this plate if you can copy or borrow it to  have copied.

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

Good thinking Axel.

I have sent a query to a company called Vintage Brass Plates, http://www.vintagebrassplates.co.uk and will see if they can reproduce them and get a price.  Perhaps others will be interested.  I think I would prefer gray/black instead of the red though.

Also here is a scan of the plate from my PC scanner.  It measures 112mm x 50mm.

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

Had a good couple of hours on EPC last night and cant find any reference to either this or the other plate Axel listed.

Must both have been market specific items fitted at dealer etc....

Since even the radios etc were like this in period it makes sense

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

that's the company ! they make repro plates for vintage cars/ tractors etc (my other life....) maybe make a small production run , i would buy 6 off i have an obsession with nice detail things like that , my ww2 american army 6x6 was smothered in plates like that so the g.i.'s had no excuse for breaking things (even the tacho had a max revs achieved needle only reset-able by a keylock) -nice -basically if you made the rods come out the block and you had spanked it you were toast!

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

Hi

My 1985 300GD SWB manual has the identical plate to Axels stuck to the dash next to the Radio.

Looks like someone has tried to peel it off at somepoint :-)

I have always assumed they were standard fit.

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

Well I have found a place who are making some up for me.

Should be about £17 each plus postage in brass, same as I picutured (hopefully) with black instead of red paint.

Its a limited run so let me know if anyone is interested.

cheers,

Graham.

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

Here is a plate, it is embossed.
I will PM those who are on my list for your addresses, if you still want one.
Note that the holes will need drilling.

I'm amazed. I can't believe you guys would forget how your diff-lock and transfer case controls work, so is it just for the decorative effect or to impress uninitiated passengers? I'm definitely missing something here..... wink

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

Hi

It all adds to the "feel" of the vehicle - I think Land Rover Defenders had a set of instructions on a plate in front of the gear levers. I always felt that it made the driver appreciate that he was operating a piece of machinery rather than a normal car.

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

I was pretty surprised that all G's did not have them.  Every other 4wd I have had has had similar for (mechanical) 4wd activation but of course the G is a bit more special with the factory lockers.

I know for a fact that non-G people have been impressed when they get in the cab, perhaps because it makes it more obvious that the G has lockers.

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

its a  good piece of mind and advisory for alien passengers and newbies to the G. you'd be suprised how many people dont know how the tc gear lever works. or what the diff lock 'buttons' are for..

thanks for your help grazza !

What is a tc gear lever and how does it work? and everybody knows what the 'diff lock buttons are for' as they a) look good, b) fill space up on the dash, so it looks as if your getting value for money and c) can change colour (orange to red and back again). laugh

I did put a return address sticker on the back of the package that Graham sent, so if postie can't deliver then hopefully it'll land back here (Swindon) instead of Aus!

Re: W460 locker & TC instruction plate

The UK version W460 of c.1984 had a square version of that plate with silver text on black background.

edit:

Just noticed Axel's post above - that's the one.
