G Wagen weekend visit to the Normandy Beeches
Proposed plan
Weekend of 8 – 10 July 2011
The purpose of the trip is to visit the beach at Arromanches in Normandy, where on the 6th June 1944 the British landed as part of the largest amphibious assault in history, to liberate France and Europe.
Ferry
We are proposing to meet on Friday morning in Portsmouth harbor to catch the 08.30 boat to Le Harve, and then travel in convoy to the Campsite at Arromanches. The return journey will be via the 1700 sailing from Le Harve on the Sunday evening arriving back in Portsmouth at 2130.
Campsite and Accommodation
There are a number of campsites and numerous hotels in the area to choose from. The organisers will make a base at the campsite at Camping d’ Arromanches which can be found via the following link.
www.arromanches.com/uk/camping_accueil.htm
If you have any difficulty with booking the campsite, then please contact Richard Wells on his mobile 07710 819200. Weather permitting we will hold a BBQ at the site on the Friday evening. Please bring your own food and drink. On the Saturday we are hoping to organise a table at a local restaurant to which all will be welcome.
Museums – Road runs
Saturday
For those who are interested on Saturday morning we will meet at the D Day museum on the sea front at Arromanches. An excellent museum, with large models depicting the battle and cinemas showing archive film of the landing. Alternatively there are many smaller memorials and places of interest should you wish to do your own thing.
In the afternoon time permitting, there will be a road run along the coast.
On Sunday
Starting from the campsite at 11am there will be further road run to the superb Pegasus Bridge Museum dedicated to the men of the Airborne division, tasked with holding the bridge ahead of the advancing 21st Army group as they advanced from the beach.

This leaves the afternoon to explore the area before heading for the boat.
We do hope you can join us, in what should be an enjoyable and interesting weekend
