Hi
Does any one know if you can fit a turbo or supercharger to a 300 GES petrol engine and if so any info on it?
Many thanks

Re: Turbo /supercharger?

yes, turbo technics developed a twin turbo kit for the m103 12v 3 litre petrol engine. Is meant to push out 300bhp. I've got one of these kits but I am not convinced my manual gearbox will cope with the torque and also with the limitations of the brakes so I haven't fitted it.

Do you think that would be ok for mine as it is an automatic with 135 k miles on the clock ?Are they meant to be reliable ?
How badly does it effect the mpg do you think?
Do you want to sell it ?

Re: Turbo /supercharger?

I have no idea how reliable they are or if the autobox will cope with the torque but contempoary reports that fuel consumption is little changed if at all, again due to of the increase in torque. I paid £1,000 for mine, its unused, boxed if you want it, you can have it for that price but it could cost you a good couple of grand to have it fitted. This though is arguable, some users believe that the kit can be run without engine modifications http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w124-e-ce-d-td-class/1305799-1988-300ce-m103-twin-turbo-project.html because it it is a low compression unit. Another school of thought thinks that compression needs to be lowered further. These were originally fitted by Hughes of Beaconsfield, a MB maindealer, they recommend a specialist by the name of Allan Jeffries http://www.enginetuner.co.uk/ to carry out the work, he quoted me £800 plus vat just to fit the kit with no mods but he wanted to do the mods and would offer no warranty without them. At the mileage of your engine I would guess its not far away from needing a rebuild anyway and this could cost you around £1k, if I am being honest with you I would say the kit is better off being used in a w124 saloon or a coupe as these cars have the brakes and suspension to cope with the extra performance.

Re: Turbo /supercharger?

The 300 auto box will handle a 500 V8, so it will surely handle the charger, although I can not see it getting 300 bhp without some serious modification.

I agree that at 135 that petrol engine is not to far from wanting a rebuild, so an option is to bolt it onto the engine as it is, if it blows the engine, not too much harm done, just get another. You will never know unless you try, If I was driving a petrol I would.

A am busy with a conversion myself, and would like to warn you, what seems simple on paper is a different matter in practice, but I hope to start mine Wednesday, so still exited.

Go on give it a go.

I think there are some issues with the twin turbo setup fouling the steering column on right hand drive G wagons. Is that correct prwales ?

not sure, it'll be tight but it looks much the same in the photos of the w124 engine bay
