Off topic - new V8
Slightly off topic, but I now have sitting next to my G Wagen a new C63 AMG estate, of which I took delivery on Monday. I have got the 1000mile run period before I can really open her up. But even with the restrictions of 4,500rpm & 80mph the sound and pace of the normally aspirated V8 is something very special....

NICE, NICE, NICE!

Welcome to the 6.3 club
Well its better than a Ranger rover at least *sniff*. BTW how is Project 'this will make people green' going?
Spider1V
Hi Spider, I still have the Rangies I use them to hide the mini digger
My secret project is still underway, should be getting painted soon.
I will have to invite everyone up for the unveiling, if the club ever manages to agree on public liability insurance !!
Why do they call it a 6.3 when it's a 5.4??? Confuses me.
It depends which engine you are refering to Ian.
The M156 in my ML63 is 6208cc normally aspirated and is named after the legendary M100 engine.
The 63 name was carried over to the later generation M157 AMG engine which as you say is actually a twin turbo V8 of 5.4 litres.
So which MBs got the 6.3 and which ones are just badged 6.3?
I know the G63 is the 5.4L TT
Hi (Just for Spider1V)
Original V8 6.3
NA M100 is the original 6.3 in the W100 and W109 with a 6.9 option in the W116
The early NA V8 motors M116 3.5, 3.8, 4.2 and M117 4.5, 5.0, 5.6 were replaced by the M119 4.2, 5.0 in turn replaced by the NA and Kompressor M113 4.3, 5.0, 5.4 models which again in to the new millenium were replaced by the below V8's...
NA M159 6.2 in the SLS
BiTurbo M157 5.5 in the S63AMG, CL63AMG, CLS63AMG, E63AMG, G63AMG
BiTurbo M157 6.0 in the S63AMG, E63AMG, CL63AMG, CL63AMG
NA M156 6.2 in the E63AMG, ML63AMG, R63AMG, S63AMG, CL63AMG, CLK63AMG. CLS63AMG, C63AMG, SL63AMG
Kompressor M155 5.5 in the SLR McLaren
NA M152 5.5 in the SLK55AMG
NA M273 4.7 in the GL450, S450, ML450
NA M273 5.5 in the E500/550, CL500/550, CLS500/550, GL500/550, ML500/550, S500/550, CLK500/550, G500/550
BiTurbo M278 4.6 in the S500, CL500, CLS500, E550, GL550
And also the V12's the M120 6.0 and 7.3 in tuned form and M137 in 6.0 and the same 7.3 tuned form were replaced by the below V12's
BiTurbo M158 6.0 in the Pagini Huayra

Bi Turbo M279 6.0 S65AMG, SL65AMG, G65AMG
Thats enough now Spider, cool shower for youu ;)
Way to late for that!!! Gonna report this post to the admin's - You know the rules NO PORN on the forum. I have made a mess thats going to take ages to clean up, well once I have a cigarette and found the Kleenex
On a serious note, having had two ML55's normally aspirated 5,5ltrs of AMG V8 muscle, great engine and great noise, driving around with David does sort of spoil one and occasionally I do hanker for the 'Bad boy' growl sorry Roar, but then you get into a straight V8 500 and while the noise is far removed from the AMG's (unless your in Roly's 500) there is something about the subtle rumble of of the V8, that sadly is not matched by any other engine available in G's (sorry 606 converts).
The full rush of planting the right foot and just going...and going...and going - not like an AMG where you have just speed dialed the four horsemen of the apocalypse and shot into hyper space at one yard slower than the speed of light, but just knowing you have the ability to accelerate to about 130 MPH with little effort, no stress, a gentle canter opposed to a manic gallop.... yeah - I am getting old... but doing it in style!
Spider1V
lovely, looks a fun way for me to lose my licence! we had an older shape E55 in the Aston convoy on the way down to france and it definitely stood its ground, crazy really.
as for the RR, is the new one a S/C, they are rare as rocking horse at the moment due to production being stopped.
BiTurbo M157 5.5 in the S63AMG, CL63AMG, CLS63AMG, E63AMG, G63AMG
BiTurbo M157 6.0 in the S63AMG, E63AMG, CL63AMG, CL63AMG
Hi Gav I don't think the information I have highlighted in red is correct. As far as I am aware the M157 engine is only available in the 5.5litre size there is no 6.0 litre version.
For a simple reference the M156 normally aspirated 6.2 litre AMG63's swapped to the 5.5 Bi-turbo in 2011 but are still called AMG63.
Hi BB
You may be right? I am no expert on these later engines...on further digging my listings show...
157.980 E55 S63AMG
157.981 E60 CLS63AMG and E63AMG Estate
157.982 E55 ML63AMG GL63AMG
157.983 E55 SL63AMG
157.984 E55 G63AMG
157.985 E55 S63AMG
It may only be the CLSAMG and E63AMG Estate (212) or it could be a mistake in the listing?
You probably have more first hand knowledge through ownership?

You would think that, then you see the Range Rovers........*snif*

Huss - all that heat is making you delusional! how can you compare a 606 oil burning , smelly, stinky diesel v's clean smelling effortless smooth V8???
Advice.... Stay out of the sun old bean!

They do have V8 engines though Spider, just not petrol ones.

Hmmmmm - I suppose thats sort of OK

v10 should fit, Brabus got a v12 in their adaption
Agreed. I expressed myself badly, I wasn't referring to space but to the overall difficulty, eg drivetrain, box, electrics etc.
Apparently for quite a few routine parts replacements on the V10 (like the alternator) the engine has to be removed to allow fitting. At around £2000 each time the engine has to come out that would make me a bit nervous of a well used Touareg !!
your avin a laugh mate...!!
FYI guys....

606a is more than adeqaute. more endlesss power needed ? myna and an uprated turbo wll see a healthy 350 bhp and economy....;)

Sounds like an MB A Class
Talking of the 6.3 club.......here was ours, which unfortunately is now sold on. One of the best and most enjoyable drives I've ever owned. Would definitely buy one again some day........forget the modern day ones. Over 3500rpm this car growled like a wild animal. It also had an increadible 50mph+ acceleration on the motorways: really great car.
Beautiful . Of the cars I wish I had kept, a 1990 420SE is high on the list. My SL60 and my G are amongst my all time favourites, but I must say I'm not too fond of MB's more recent iterations. My 2000 CLK55 I kept for about eight weeks Basically I think they lost their way around 1998. Pity really, they used to make such good cars. My 2000 (MY'01) GS430 goes like a dream and doesn't have that obligatory MB extra from that period, FeO2
many would agree with you Ian but I suspect it started even earlier with the crumbling looms on the facelifted w124s
