This is my first 4x4 and I've searched net but can't seem to find description of the gears I need to select for different terrain. I've got  an '89 230 auto and atm for normal everyday use I have the transfer gear in 's' (bottom left) and then select 4th gear to drive off and beyond. Also I can never push the lever into 1, is this normal?
A link to a diagram or something would be useful. Ta in advance.

Re: stupid newb question

Use SA with drive for driving on roads with snow or ice, or even a lot of water when you are going to doing normal road sppeds for the conditions.   Use GA when your driving in deep snow, floods, loose surfaces when your road speed is not likely to go above 25 m.p.h.

Use the highest gear possible, bearing in mind that the auto box chooses any gear up to the one selected, not the gear you have chosen.   Use low gears to descend allowing the engine to brake the vehicle.   On a really steep descent the engine braking on the 230 isn't the greatest, and it can be improved if you engange the rear diff lock and put the handbrake on.   This should only be done if 1st low is too high a gear to hold the car back.

Gear 1 will only select if you are going slower than the range within which it works.   Try it from a standstill and see if it works then.   Some gearboxes had 1st selected from the 2nd position by pushing the lever sideways.

Enjoy your G, they're very rewarding to drive, especially at this time of year.

Try this URL address:

First gear selection can be difficult or unattainable at times since this is never selected and over time the gear stops working for several reasons. Something physical drops in the selector preventing gear selection but usually it is a cylindrical device on the first gear selector.

This attachment gets clogged up preventing first gear selection or a bent or mal-adjusted selector rod. One other point, I can not quite remember if this device is fitted to the 230's.

Cheers,

Re: stupid newb question

Hi all, I had the same problem could not manually select first gear, there is apparently a small set of ball bearings in first gear position, I had these looked at and changed.hey presto no problem with first gear selection,
