Can any suggest a way of repairing the the crimped in UJ that is on the steering column (the end that attaches to the steering box) I know the other end is replaceable but don't want to buy a new assembly unless I really have to.

Re: Steering Column UJ

Hi

PM me your chassis number....i have just checked on 3 or 4 sample numbers and they all list both UJ's as spare parts?

Not sure if yours is a 460 or 463 etc

Let me know if you want

Re: Steering Column UJ

If your U J complaint is due to seizure, soak it it in some diesel or WD40 type liquid over night and then try to work it free using plenty of oil.  If it is wear then you will need replacing it.  You try prop. shaft re-conditioners to see if they can repair.  But I feel, your choice is either second hand or new.

Cheers,

Unfort it is wear and UJ looks rusty, and a bit clunky. Unfortunately its crimped in, but I think the UJ is the same as the other end , which I have a spare, but I presume you need special tools to get around this, though surely other MB stuff must use these joints?

Re: Steering Column UJ

Many thanks to Rakesh ad Gavin,
All sorted , took it to local propshaft place and they managed to do it whilst I wait, I wouldn't hesitate to other owners to make sure they keep these joints covered in Spray Grease etc. Mine seized when I laid it up only for a few months etc. Made steering horrid, interesting how many people vtried to blame steering pump failure 1st
