It seems that in the US there are a number of places that offer hire of specialist MB tools (Peachparts, Expidition Importe etc).. no one like that over here I can find though.

Although I don't mind buying good quality kit, some things are so specialised that it makes it an expensive proposition to purchase them to only use once or twice (TDC dial gague and chain riveter for example).

Any one know of any rental outfit here?

Re: Specialist tools

Dial type indicators are only about £20 for the smaller stroke ones (5mm?) at the right moment in the sales.. and that was a decent Mitutoyo one I got years back. Postage there and back would be near the same and it is a useful engineering tool. Clarke do one from Machine mart for £22 delivered or I see a Moore and Wright one for £28 which is a good make (Google Dial Type Indicator Shopping).

I saw someone muttering that the chain spliter was special..older Lancias you ground the link rivets off and got a joiner link but suspect not an offical MB thing to do as the joiner link could be weaker (make sure the clip is on the right way..)

Re: Specialist tools

I've got a couple of regular mito dial gauges but the MB one I want is actually calibrated for the 606 which makes life lots easier I think (I need to reset TDC and timing brackets which can be done with measurement but to be sure..)

Cutting the old chain I can do with a dremel, but MB have ditched the old clip on joiner link on 606 which is now rivet number (joiner links were failing) - its one of those things that you want to do right too since the cost-consequence of a broken chain are significantly in excess of the tool.

I think I'll just have to buy them - I'll let you know when I do and if anyone else wants to make use of them at any point, just ask :-)
