Spare Wheel or not ?
I noticed since the repeat showing of the G Wagon wheeler dealers episode over Christmas, owners are taking the spare wheel off the back door. What are the members views on the 'bare' back door look ?
I am of the opinion, the G looks complete with the wheel on, provided it is suitably covered.
Cheers,
Where else would you put your spare wheel ?
reduces weight, improves aerodynamics and looks better, carry 2 cans of foam repair filler, just in case
Can you get foam stuff that will allow for subsequent repair? In my experience most tyre places run a mile from a wheel full of gunk.
I don't know the answer to that but haven't had a puncture in over 13 years of g-wagen ownership...touch wood
I think it just looks complete with the wheel on the door....
Without it, feels a little bit naked!
No - that's it.. Once its full of gunk you are knackered.
Consider also that theses products only ever work if the hole is very small and in the main area of the tread. Any damage to the sidewall, or bigged than a small nail and your out of options.
AFAIK isn't is a legal requirement to carry a spare anyway?
Call me old fashioned but I like the security of a spare (and 2 x cans of foam in the door pocket).
A flat 200 miles off the ferry halfway across France or crossing the live firing range on salisbury Plain with no spare would be a great concern to me.
10 years ownership 50k + miles on and off road and never a puncture but still want that "insurance" bolted on the back door.
I understand that a tyre filled with foam can be repaired, if repairable, just that some tyre companies would ratther sell a new tyre at £+++ than a repair at £15.
Yup You have a spider1V thumbs up on that!!

What the law is now I do not know. It used to be that if you carried a spare it had to be legal, but that it was not illegal not to carry one...don't ya luv da law...:-)
since when did spiders have thumbs !!
back to the question... a G looks odd without the spare on the back, almost like a van !!
I had a puncture on the G yesterday, no tyre shop open but a very heavy spare on the tailgate.....id say its a must....just foam will be taking a chance from my past experience and its does make a good repairable tyre useless, doesn't always seal the puncture, hardens on the rim and tyre and difficult to clean.
Disadvantage of the spare on the rear.....don't reverse into anything that can't be seen below the window level.....thats painfully expensive!
I have AT tyres with thick sidewalls; but offroading I would take the spare, what sort of tyre punctured?
The tyre that punctured was a fairly new 305/40 r22, somehow a screw went in right in the middle of the tread....
I think your answer is in the type of tyre, off road or AT tyres have chunky tread as well as thick side walls
looks like the consensus is spare on the back door. The bare back door does look like van ok. Luckily enough I've never had to use the spare but I'm not going to tempt fate....
