I'm not sure if this is the right area for this post, but lets give it a try. I might be getting an old G-wagon (5-door, possibly early 1980's, 1982 for example) in a year and was thinking that I could make it look a bit more modern by painting it pearl black and putting never bumpers (and new front mask) and electrics into it, maybe little redoing for the interior too. Nothing's decided yet but I'm keen on starting old G-project and hoping it's not too big slice right for the beginning.

I was kind of hoping you could list all the internet-shops selling G-parts: bumpers, masks, electrics, interior and  spare parts! If you have some advice for reformating an old G, I'd be happy to hear them!

Thanks!

Re: Shops @ internet selling G-parts

the parts you need will cost you a fortune, my advice would be buy a 463.
That sounds like the look that you want but even if you do achieve it you will still have the running gear of a 460 (and all its rust traps too.)
You could easily spend more tarting up a 460 than you would buying a 463.

What parts you actually contained in that "fortune"? Front and rear bumpers, front mask,  head and front lights, and front signal bulbs (on the hood). I don't think they would cost that much, or am I completely wrong?

the end caps alone on the 463 bumper are a couple of hundred quid each.

 tsdt,

There was a picture of some one who has re sprayed and made some changes, but I can't remember if it was a 463 or 460, but it did look good. If you want some good parts you could try James at G-Wagen, based in Caversham.

I would have to agree (shock I know) with prwales, as it could be better to look at a 463, though if it is going to be given to you for free and its in good condition, then I would say go for it!

Best of luck and keep posting

Its all relative.  If you are a multi-millionaire it wont be that much.  If you are hobo its going to be alot.

For the price of the bits you have listed above+ a 460 you will be in 463 money.  Although it may be a 1982 vehicle the parts for the new ones are parts for 100K cars so they aint cheap.   If you want a G for the looks of a 463, buy a 463 and get with it the refinements of a 463.

Re: Shops @ internet selling G-parts

a 1982, X/Y reg G- wagen is unlikely to be in a pristine condition, there will probably be serious issues of rust in the rear 3/4s.
Depending on the mileage and usage the engine and drive train may need work...ditto the interior.
These will be your priorities before you can start cosmetic alterations.
The G-class centre, Dronsfields and Mercman can help you with parts.

Thank you all very much for satisfating answers! I'm falling to the side of 463 or 461 at least if I'm going to buy G at all.

I would like to ask something else too. How is an old G to drive on street (lets assume I have normal street tires)? Steering, noise level inside the car, etc? Thank you beforehand already!

Re: Shops @ internet selling G-parts

First the bad news;
Thirsty, no matter what engine.

Now the good news;
They are much better than people think, even thought the design (and possibly the car) is over 30 years old! If you fancy the fact that you can get out in almost any weather, you will most probably be the only G around and you will get people comming up and asking 'what is it?' and more than likley if you see another G, its will be someone here, is all part of the experiance of G ownership.

To drive, if you have normal tyres, you will hear little to no road noise,  Depending on model type (go for powersteering) the steering in some of the older ones can be a bit tough. If you get the LWB you have a rather practical vehicle in that it doubles as a good family vehichle, and can cary and tow well above its weight as can the SWB, however the SWB can be a bit a limited to inerior space.

Best of luck!

I may be biased but go for the 463!!. Mine is a 1993 with around 172 000 on the clock and runs really quietly for something with a 3L 6 cylinder diesel engine. Got road tyres on it at the moment and there is no road noise. Lovely to drive. Surprisingly light for a vehicle with no powered steerring and has a good turning circle .
Enjoy!!

I think all G's have power steering.

Re: Shops @ internet selling G-parts

Oh, I stand corrected. I had been told by the previous owner that it doesn't, but it is surprisingly light for something that didn't. That would account for it. Never needed to look but might have to have a rummage now!!!
Thanks for that

Re: Shops @ internet selling G-parts

I think only 463s had power steering as standard. On 460s it came later on...the very early cars might not have it as standard.

Mine is a 1993 463 so presumably it was there as standard. Accounts for a lot!

Re: Shops @ internet selling G-parts

I believe all GWagens officially imported by MBUK had power steering.

In fact only a few 230G and 240GDs sold elsewhere did not have it.

Re: Shops @ internet selling G-parts

the earliest G I once owned a Y plate 1983 had power steering, Mortinson is correct. The power steering on the 463 though is stronger and more noticable in my experience than on the 460.

Sorry to clarify I was speaking globally, not UK-specific. You guys know the home market better...
