Serious vibration through the Transfer box
My G Wagen has developed an alarming vibration that comes through the transfer box gear lever. It occurs as I pull away from a stand still or at low speeds(<20mph), but the vibration stops at about 40 mph as the auto box changes up.
The truck in at the garage and they have started by re-alinged the prop shafts. But vibration still remains.
I have searched through previous posts and have the following pointers:
check / change - the two gearbox mounts, engine mounts, wheel bearings, rubber mount on top of the shock absorbers. Also mentioned was that the gear box is vacuum regulated and a leak in teh vacuum circuit could cause problems.
Any advice welcome.
Also, does any know of a good atuobox mechanic in the Aberdeen area?
My old lwb 300GD had a nasty vibration a few years ago, turned out to be a stiff joint on the short prop between the gearbox and transfer box. I eventually identified it by letting it tick over in gear, up on a ramp with the wheels in the air and looking underneath. The engine/gearbox and transfer box looked like they were fighting each other, how it hadn't damaged the rubber mountings was a miracle. Prop repaired by a local specialist, problem solved. Any leaks in the gearbox vacuum system will only result in poor/sharp gear changes, no vibration. The classic G Wagen vibration is very often the front prop, easily proved either way by running it with the prop off, if I remember right you have to have it in 4wd for the speedo to work without the front prop. Also worth checking front wheel bearings and cv joints. Hope this is of help, regards, Mick.
If you have a W463, and the prop. shaft (p/shaft) between the gear box (g/box) and tansfer box (t/box) has a cv joint fitted to the g/box side, it is likely that the grease inside the cv joint has hardened. Disconnect the p/shaft at the t/box end and rotate your p/shaft, if the turning is not smooth, you have harded grease or internally, there is a phyical defect that needs addressing.
Usually, it is the front uj, of the front p/shaft that has excessive wear in it. Generally speaking, have all the joints and slider joints checked out and grease as necessary, ensure all the nuts and bolts on the p/shaft flanges are secure.
Other than that you are delving into wheel bearing, tyre condition etc, etc...
Leak in the vacuum system, modulating the g/box will only affect the shift points of the g/box. This will not cause vibration problems.
Mine turned out to be rotten engine mounts in my 230
