Sell/Repair/Engine transplant?
After nearly 3 years of G ownership I am at the end of my tether.
I purchased my 280GE ages ago with the intention of recomminsioning it for daily use.
Sadly it was dogged with fuel system/engine issues and hasn't turned a mile in all that time - even with money spent on reconditioning the fuel tank, new fuel pump, new ignition system and more - the damn thing still won't run right!
I may be faced with the choice of selling it if I don't make some progress soon. I seem to have run beyond my level of expertise here and even a few decent mechanic friends are stumped/frustrated by it.
Then there is the temptation of an engine transplant. I hear the OM617a turbodiesel engine is a good swap for the M110 - can anyone tell me how much work it is to convert a stock 280GE auto to accept this engine and whether the match of it and the sludgebox would be good or not?
The ideal situation would be having a knowledgable G mechanic look it over but I don't know anyone in my area.
HELP! PLEASE!
Hello G-Funk,
I am sorry to learn that you still have problems with your engine. From your thread, the low compression in your number three cylinder will not help, secondly, I suspect you have issues with your metering head and, or warm up regulator despite the repairs you have done to it.
I have a few garage suggestions for your consideration; the only one I know is Michael A Key, this is a family run business and the 'Old' man, the Farther, (Head of Business) is quite experienced. The others, I have no experience of, but seem capable to undertake your task.
I would offer to come and see you but I do no longer have any personal transport and more importantly, I do not have the specialist tools needed to undertake your problem. I would be only scratching my bump or head.

Thanks Rakesh,
Your words of support and those links might keep me sane yet. It's totally frustrating - so much so the wife suggested I sell the G (which I don't want to do!).
I'll give the Nottingham company a call on your recommendation. Fresh eyes and time served experience may be all that is needed but my working conditions are not great (outdoors, limited space) and I recenty began a new job which while well paid, takes up a lot of my free time.
Paying for a solution may well prove to be a better option at this point.
Thanks again,
Paul
