As my summer tyres were having difficulty coping with this amazing weather we've had recently, I got a chance to try out a set of BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres, as I had a set of 7x15 alloys to put them on, though they were a bit big for my taste, they do make it look more of a proper off-roader (31x10.5).

Performance-wise, they do shorten the braking distance on packed snow, and the car rides a bit higher now, better view of the road, and a bit more compliance on bumps due to the huge sidewall.

To explain the photos, you can guess which is which:

BFG 7x15 on the front with General Grabber UHP 255/65 on Atik 7.5x16 on the rear (about 2 inch overall diameter difference, ~5mph diff at 65).

Same front compared to the old spare, a 6x16 with 255/65 Michelins (ancient tread) - I always struggle differentiating between these two star-shaped alloys for early 463s.

Random shots of the BFG.

Some of the temp extremes we've had in the east midlands.

How are things with the BFG's? Any good in the dry?

I'd say they're better in the dry than the wet. Changed them last week, back to the General's 255/65R16, much better grip, more a road tyre than off-road, but I can't complain as the last time I went offroad was in...2007?

The BFGs will never be a good road tyre, but it's a good compromise, still offers half-decent grip. I've seen people running the G on original 6x16 alloys and 205 section tyres, those are fine as long as you are never in a hurry, so in that respect the BFGs are wider and offer some more rubber/grip, but for spirited driving, get a road-oriented tyre. Also the BFG is virtually indestructible, so not too much worry about hitting a kerb..

Hi
I was told that one should never run tyres/wheels of different diameter front and rear on the 463 series which is (permanent 4 wheel drive) because you could get "transmission windup" which can damage the drive train!! or was this perculiar to the 4x4 Ford Sierra???

Hi fixwin!
Sorry I should have explained better, I took that photo WHILE changing the tyres around, I would never drive like that either, the photo was just taken to show the overall size difference between the two, for instance if one was considering a bigger size tyre :)
