Hi wondered if i could have some advice from the G' experts here, my Wagon is an 88 lwb 280GE that's been converted to a 5 cylinder 300d. All works well and has done for years looking at the documents i have.

One thing that doesn't work is the rev counter.

The dial is fitted okay and connections runthrough to some kind of sensor located at one side of the engine bay, the connections coming out of this are all cut though.

My question is how simple is it to bring the rev counter back t life

Or is it easier to remove the rev counter, if so where could i get a blanking plate from

As ever thanks for all the help here

Re: Rev counter keep it or delete it?

The common fault in the failure, is the module inserted in the black round sensor.  If you unscrew the top off the round black cylinder mounted on the nearside, of the engine compartment.

Pull out the module, sometimes, in doing so, the cover pulls out other wise this, you will have to do after the module has been taken out. Force is require to price the cover off or use a thin blade of a screw driver to price the base of the cover and pull the cover off.  With the cover off, take a small small piece of paper of about A5 size (half of A4 size) and fold it into four.  Pack the folded paper between the module and its cover, pressing the cover back on the module.  Fit the module in the socket and screw the cap back on.

Start your vehicle, hopefully the rev counter may come back to life, if it does this would be a temporary fix, ideally you need a new module.  Or your could have other issues to diagnose, there is the speed sensor from the crankshaft to consider.  Wriggle the green wire to see if the rev counter comes to life (engine runing).

Hi i thought the revcounter for a 280 6 cylinder engine is calibrated differently to a 5 cylinder desiel engine maybe thats why it doesnt work , if you remove it mercedes dealer can supply the blanking plate for a non rev counter dash pod that just clips in place of the rev counter .

Re: Rev counter keep it or delete it?

I have the checked part number for the rev. counter for the 280 GE and 300 GD, they are the same.

Whether an engine is 5 cylinder or 10 cylinder; one revolution on either would still be 360 degrees, which is what is sensed by the crankshaft sensor.

The mechanism for part of the signal comes from the ignition coil on the 280 GE and since there is no coil on Diesels', there is a module instead to substitute that signal.

Cheers,

Re: Rev counter keep it or delete it?

Hi Thanks for everyones replies, i must apologies i don't think i explained the problem i have (among others)

When the g was converted from a 280ge to 300d who ever did it didn't connect the rev counter up at all.
So i have rev counter in dash with wiring/connections going through to engine compartment and into a little box/typ thing on the passenger side of the compartment then the wires/connections come out of here but are cut off and don't connect anywhere??

My question is how do i connect up these wire to the engine

Apologies if my first post was a little vague

Thanks again!

Re: Rev counter keep it or delete it?

Hello 1975mark,

I had drafted an answer previously but lost it all, so this time round, I am going to be brief.

I have tried asking the forum for a wiring diagram to establish how to wire in a rev. counter, no results.  This information may be bought from the Mercedes service and parts portal on the web-site, which costs €4.00 per hour.

You need a crank shaft sensor, this might already be on your engine.  You have the rev counter, but you do need the plug and module insert in it and finally wiring loom, I not included incidentals such as brackets and terminals.

The items relevant to the attached diagram are the following: 15, 45, 90, 130 and 145.

I sorry that I can not be of any further to you.  You try to see if there are any universal, after market kits you may be able to adapt, these I have not checked for either,  the thought has only just come to me as I was finishing this draft.

Good Luck,

If everything else fails ,  I think one can install similar size rev counter but connected to the  back outlet of the alternator. May be an idea to check it out with Bosch.
