Rear indicators not working,
Hi all,
Just spent six months derusting my 280ge and booked the MOT for the morning and doing the final tidy up, but the rear indicators are not working.
I have checked all the fuses as they get a bit coroded, which fixed the offside low beam, but cant get those rear indicators working, any common point of failure for them both??
Any advice welcome.
Thanks
Independently check the bulbs to see if these are working (by removing them from the socket), check the connections and tabs which rest on the bulb connections. Check for a live feed at the tab. Check the indicator relay and substitute an earth wire from the socket to chassis. Do check to see if you have the correct bulb fitted.
Good luck,
the tank is a major weak spot in the 460's design, you could cut the exhaust off before the tank and divert it to a side exit. I'd be tempted to set the tank on fire to get the petrol out before welding, sounds bizarre but you don't want a flash fire when you are welding it. This needs doing properly as rust in the tank will trash the injection system over time and this may have already started.
you should be able to pick up a piece of scrap stainless steel to use as a tank guard from any ferrous metal scrappie, just cut to fit with shears. Its not an MOT issue though and unlikely to be a problem unless you intend off road use. From recall the fuel pump is no where near the bottom of the tank anyway but its a good idea to cover it in tape for corrosion protection as far as is possible. It is very common for the fuel tank to rust top-down from the area where the cladding holds water as this goes through repeated heating and cooling cycles associated with the exhaust.
I can't remember but there is an chance I have the tank guard from my 460 left over from the summer when I upgraded it all to the plastic tank. It was in good nick I seem to rmember. I'll check tonight and if its still there and you want it just pay for the postage (or pickup from Farnham if you prefer)
Thanks Rakesh!
I went out in the morning to start the hunt, the battery was so low I had to jump start the truck and everything started working again! Seriously wierd! Is it even possible that a low battery could stop the rear indicators working?
The MOT went better than expected, and only failed on a blowing exhaust, rear sidelight not working and a reflector missing, so all my work was not in vain.
The exhaust is blowing from above the petrol tank, so I spent sunday dropping the tank.. now just to rust proof the tank and guard (the guard is in a really bad state!), bandage the exhaust with epoxy tape and re-assemble!
The exhaust pipe is rotten where water must have been sitting in the fibreglass insulation above the petrol tank, I plan to put a sheet of tin foil between the epoxy bandage and the tank so the fibreglass doesnt become epoxied to the exhaust when it heats up and sets. Still it lasted 25 years, so this it probably enough to see it through another 25 years. :) and epoxy wont rust.. :)
