Hi,

Just after some advice - rear (cargo/boot/whatever) door not shutting as has dropped and is now hitting door stop/guide or whatever it's called. Question is, how do I go about getting it repaired? Suspicion is the bottom hinge has moved. Have attached some pics that show cracks in exterior that appeared with this fault and 'bolted' (not welded?) hinge attachment. Would like to keep rear wheel on back but suspect weight the issue - isn't law now don't need to carry spare so could replace with tyre repairer sprays? Again any advice here? (Usually only use weekends and local so should be OK - for longer voyages will consider as appropriate). Swing wheel carrier other option but trying to avoid spending as on tight budget.

Cheers,

Stewart

Re: Rear door not shutting

If you take the wheel off, you should be able to establish if the hinges are in a bad way?

I suspect pins are siezed and in turn is/has stressed the body.

If you remove rear door panel there is some adjustment there but helps with two people ( One to loosen bolts ( 17mm? I think) 3 top and bottom, the other to jiggle door.

I did have a new pin put in mine buy an engineer but didn't work long term, so had to buy genuine, not cheap abt £65?each,.

In short term remove rear wheel and it will probably shut with a lift.

Those hinges need regular oiling.

Hi Stewart

Hinges are both the same A463 740 01 37 £71.50 + vat each and Jason is correct they are hold on with 10mm bolts 17mm socket size. 2 on each hinge to the body and 3 on each hinge to the door.

You can buy the hinge mounting panels (door pillar) A460 640 15 10 £247 + vat and the outer panel that the hinge passes through are A460 647 13 07 £81.50 + vat for the lower and A460 647 15 07 £66.50 + vat for the upper, all from MB Germany.

You may however may be able to strengthen them up from inside and refinish.

Price files are down for back up - will get prices tomorrow....

Hope this helps

Gav

Re: Rear door not shutting

Thanks for comments - suspect hinges aren't the (main) problem. Believe good ol' corrosion has chomped its way through the hinge mounting in door pillar so case of getting some welding work done. Had some great feedback on issues to achieve this (big thanks Peter) and no surprises but not straightforward - depends on extent of corrosion and standard of fix required. Unfortunately functioning boot is requisite of keeping this car... can I justify these expenses however (new tyres and shocks all round (essential), electric fan (not essential) in last 2 months already - plus a horse now!?!). Anyway, did have some fantastic fun in the snow this year and great off-roading near Bala.
