Re: rear brake shoes

You need to find out whether your brake shoes are Merceds or Perot. I don't *think* you can tell this from the datacard/ vin records (I may be wrong), I htink you have to take the drums off and have a look (they are marked on the shoes)

Mercedes own were common in early Gs, Perot from mid-late 80s in general, but they are not interchangeable!

Now the bad news.... New shoes are very expensive (c. £350+VAT)  and only available from MB; no one else makes them or the liners that I have been able to find (I just re-lined mine last week).

The good news is that you can get liners (around £90+VAT) which a local brakeshop should re-rivet for a few quid (you will need to make sure you buy the MB rivets at the same time you buy the liners).

Liners are available in several sizes - as I found last week though for an easy life buy a new set of dums and standard liners and everything goes back together with the setup almost perfect out of the box (and when set up right, the drums are very effective).

If you want to stick with your existing drums, then they need to be <260mm worn or have to be replaced anyway (around £100+VAT).

You will probably also want to look at the spring and retaining pins (they tend to get very coroded) and if in doubt replace (a new set isn't terribly expensive from MB). Auto-adjuster can also be cleaned up at the same time - you can see what this all looks like here www.flickr.com/photos/benstoneham/sets/72157632567204667/ and I think Rakesh (Pisonhead) is about to publish a 'how to' guide which I thought was very good.

Re: rear brake shoes

Admitly, I am slightly out of touch with some prices from M/Benz. Rear brake shoes were always highly priced but that is because they had a high surcharge levied, this was refunded upon submission of the old set, effectively bringing the cost price around £40.00.

Local motor factors can provide you with a service to re-line the shoes at a similar price (per side).

Re: rear brake shoes

“To identify the make, we have two ways.....
First way, the make is printed on the cable sheathing....good luck with that!!! It will be there but needs some good cleaning!
Second way, is the way in which the cable fastens to the back plate of the drum, as below....
The type MERCEDES BENZ (DB), the cable is bolted onto the back plate via a bracket
the type PERROT, the cable is clipped into the back plate with a small clip
You can get under the inside of the rear wheel....or......
....if you have the rear brakes in pieces, then the shoes will have the name stamped in the side of them.”

If I remember rightly Steve when you were after the cables, yours were Mercedes Benz (DB) type and these should be the same for this G. The systems will be the same right across the whole set up and will not use mixed makes.

The Mercedes Benz MB (DB) part numbers are as follows….

Brake Shoe Kit MB Standard 8.70mm JURID A463 420 09 20 NLA
Brake Shoe Kit MB Standard 8.70mm BERAL A602 430 12 22 NLA or A602 430 18 22 £275+VAT
Brake Shoe Kit MB Repair Size 1 9.20mm JURID A463 420 10 20 NLA
Brake Shoe Kit MB Repair Size 1 9.20mm BERAL A602 430 13 22 NLA or A602 430 19 22 £394+VAT
Brake Shoe Kit MB Repair Size 2 9.70mm JURID A463 420 11 20 NLA
Brake Shoe Kit MB Repair Size 2 9.70mm BERAL A602 430 14 22 NLA or A602 430 20 22 £167+VAT

No Exchange Shoe Kits are available anymore!!! They used to be relined in the UK and the dealer group that used to do them is no more!!! Strangely only BERAL type shoes are available and only JURID type linings? They all do the same job, just a slightly different friction material.

Brake Lining Kit MB Standard 8.70mm JURID A463 423 01 10 £67.50+VAT
Brake Lining Kit MB Repair Size 0 7.80mm JURID A463 423 00 10 £44.90+VAT

Brake Lining Rivets N007338 004312 (4mmx8mm) Quantity 52 £0.45+VAT EACH
Note…..The rivets should come with the MB supplied lining kits…..

Spring and Pin Axle Kit MB A601 421 00 92 £11.90+VAT

Rear Brake Drum A601 423 50 01 £57.50+VAT EACH

Can supply all of these direct if you want and will PM you with details…

There is another lining kit that is from the T1 Van version, same shoe in all dimensions, the only difference is the later Vans had wear sensors in the shoes, so the lining has a pre-cut hole for this sensor in one lining on each side. This is no issue and MB issue the same part number for the early vans pre sensor.

Brake Lining Kit MB Standard 8.70mm BERAL A602 423 65 10 £27.10+VAT
Again the rivets should come with the lining kit…

Hope this helps

Re: rear brake shoes

The Perot linings are almost double that price then! Also, rivets come separately :-(

They work well anyway :-)
