I thought it might be a good idea for me and the wee chap to take the G for a bit of a run and make sure everything was in working order before the cold Highland winter arrives and it has to earn its keep.

Just come back from the Highlands. Stunning scenery. Only G I saw between Hampshire and Highlands was when we popped over to Skye. What a fantastic place to live
Nothing wrong with that accomodation either

Battle scars from pushing a LandRover out of a bog with a decomposing cow in it. I took the less smelly option and decided not to get out of the vehicle to fit a tow rope.

Re: Pre winter shakedown.

Yes you are correct, the Right to Roam legislation states that you can basically go anywhere in Scotland provided that you act responsibly and in accordance with the access code.

However this legislation only applies to access by foot, bike or horseback (or by non powered watercraft on inland waterways and lochs). It does not apply to motorised vehicles.

In this respect Scotland is far more restrictive than England or Wales when it comes to heading off into the country in your 4x4 etc. Scotland has virtually no right of way byways and there is no such thing as a green lane.

If you want to venture off road in a vehicle then you are very dependent on the permission of the landowner. If you do not have this permission then the offence is 'driving on land other than a highway without reasonable excuse or other lawful authority'  RTA1988 section 34,  which carries a fine of up to £1000.

So basically Scotland is not the 4x4 paradise it might at first appear to be.

Re: Pre winter shakedown.

Bigblock, if you are preparing for winter, where did you get to on the heated windscreen washer question that started a thread in January.  Have you fitted that heating system for your windscreen wash bottle?

Re: Pre winter shakedown.

Neat windscreen washer liquid does the trick .. guess -20C might see it freeze. Then you can just add water all summer.. The heated washer pipe seems to work with me too but when it hits the windscreen it freezes anyway.. so stop every now and then and use some snow from the road side as it is rather plentiful when down at those temps.

My winter preps include radiator after I squashed it putting body back on chassis (rear spring mounts). Cannot believe the cost as only Behr/Hella make them for 300GD (has oil cooler so is narrower than a 230GE which seems common); £450 from Germany, £534 from UK .. and local trade only motor factor.. £725! .. at those prices MB might be cheap! Currently off to see Aberdeen radiators about a rebuild but will need to make new steelwork for them as bottom mounts and a bit of the side case have too much tin worm.

.. anyone got some cheap chains for 31/10.5-15 tyres .. as 2 years ago I did need them for a descent .. going from Yoko Geolanders to Gen Grabber AT as they have more siping so that may help but hate to give up (or end up in bottom of gully with bodywork issues).

Re: Pre winter shakedown.

Hi

You have me confused me ... is yours a W463 or a W460 300GD.
It looks like a W463 from the bodywork and fuel filler and the reg plate does not give it away.

But your description of the narrower radiator because of the oil cooler leads me to think it
is a W460 because they have a narrow radiator with a bolt on oil cooler down the side,or has yours
just got a oil cooler built into the tanks on the radiator.

Anyway from MB......

W463 300GD sample chassis WDB463 328 radiator is A 463 500 12 00 £595 + vat and MB Germany have 154 in stock.

W460 300GD sample chassis WDB460 333 radiator is A 001 501 07 01 £612 + vat and MB UK have 1 in stock

You should be able to negotiate around 15% discount.

Unfortunatly they dont list service exchange versions of either which are usually half price.

If you PM me your chassis number i can work it out exactly for you.

I have had a look at the alternative MB 300D's and the W124 has a different set up , the W123 has same as W460 but different
radiator and the old 310D van has similar set up but different rad. All are slightly cheaper but not sure whay the differences are.

Hope this helps

Re: Pre winter shakedown.

Hi Consur
I fixed the wiring to my washer jets so the internal wires now heat up when the washer is activated and keep the nozzles clear of ice.

I decided not to go for the heated water bottle since you told me it would give me legionaires disease !!

Re: Pre winter shakedown.

I've got a bottle of -60 screenwash, left over from winter trip to Scandinavia, and the rear washer still frooze up. Not that it bothered me, the 2 Landcruisers were too far behind to see anyway.  :-)

Re: Pre winter shakedown.

Gav,

BigBlock has a 463 I think too...

I (mgrays) hijacked his thread! .. and have an 1988 460GDS.

Thanks for looking up the radiators .. way beyond duty there. Yes just got the full price £600+ => £746 inc Vat. from the dealer at lunch time while picking up a throttle damper and ordering new radiator mounts. I would get a bit off as you say as they know me well enough (all the store folk even came out to inspect the G when it first came in as none of them believed it existed.. just a bottomless part list that I was using to build a new one was the theory!) The 400 Euro plus delivery and VAT looks best so far (about £550 still!!)  but awaiting local recoring price.. suspect they will want something silly like £3-350 and if it is beyond £400 I will go German Euro supplier as the mounts and sides are not pretty and I always find their recores last 2/3 of an OEM as they build rust back in (no tanking to remove rust off steel parts). The previous owner had already got them to rebuild it before so I guess 7-10 years ago. Anyway just seems a mad price when I suspect you could get a Serck one for £350-400 if they made one.

Re: Pre winter shakedown.

Hi

I understand now...didn't spot the change of posts.

Where are you in the country?

There is a dealer in Newbury. Berkshire thats showing one, i am sure they would be glad to see the back of at a knock down price.

If they are local to you great but you could always courier it for the right deal.

Dealer is Cruickshank Motors Ltd  Newbury 01635 524444

You might get 20% to 35% off or more if you haggle right and its your lucky day, plead poverty, old vehicle, you dont want to get

stuck with that on your shelf, you will only throw it in the skip in 12 months time!!!

PM me your chassis number and i will double check its the right one

Cheers

Gav
