I had got the impression from somewhere that a pollen filter was available to drop into place on top of the heater air intake.  My parts department have come up with 463 830 00 18 as the part number but the filter certainly does not have the correct dimensions, being square rather than rectangular, although correct for the cross-wise dimension.  Anyone got any insight into this before I decide to butcher it.?   I can't find anything relevant using the Search facility on this site.

Re: pollen filter

Hello consur,

You are right in saying that, there used to be a pollen filter for the G-wagens'; I too, can no longer find the thread or have not seen them being advertised for a long time now.

I have found a site that generally makes pollen filters of various sizes.  Could you give dimensions of the vent box and perhaps post a photograph of the pollen filter the dealer has supplied.

Cheers,

Re: pollen filter

I have the ORC one fitted to my truck which works fine but is expensive for what it is. I would suggest making one from aluminum and an old A/c filter element.

Re: pollen filter

The air comes in from the open grill above on the bonnet. Check whether it seals on that first by putting it on that.

Re: pollen filter

Thanks Howard.  The ORC filter is indeed expensive.  Attached is a photo of the 463 830 00 18 filter supplied by Mercedes.  Although it looks square, owing to the camera perspective, it is in fact 25 x 22 cms.  The air intake opening is about 25 x 15cm.  It would not be hard to adapt the filter, but if anyone knows an alternative source for a correctly sized one that would be helpful.

Re: pollen filter

I am currently looking into pollen filters supplied by Styer-Puch on their Puch G 230GE and Puch G 300GD which have the same number.  Working on the basis the Puch and Mercedes-Benz are one and the same, I have no reason to imagine this part will not fit your G-Wagen.

I get back to you after I have heard from Styer-Puch dealer here.

The source mentioned in my earlier thread, above, of pollen filters; sadly, the smallest size they do is 255 X 508 mm, you need 250 X 150 mm.

Re: pollen filter

Looks like the part they got you is from a 2002+ 463 with the air cabin filter in a dedicated slot under the bonnet (photo taken from LHD model).

Re: pollen filter

Hello consur,

An update to your pollen filter.  The part number given to you by your dealer is wrong for sure.  The filter given to you is for the latter W463's; that is the G320 CDI and G55's.  I am assuming they were not working from the chassis number of your vehicle.  These filters are designed to fit into slots in the air boxes of the latter models and not into the vent air intake, in the engine compartment.

Mercedes never did pollen filters for that fitting, it was an after market filter as supplied by ORC, which is expensive, I believe, it was some £30 when I last checked, a long while ago, rather, when it first came out.

The Steyr Puch G-Wagen, however do make and list them on their parts EPC, enquiries from them are under going at present.

Alternatively, given the dimensions you have given me; a filter of that size is fitted to DAF Trucks costing £9.90 plus VAT and available from the truck dealers.  Depending on the price you have paid your dealer, it may be a saving returning it, or do as you have suggested, butcher it to fit and after 12 months renew with the proper one or go for the DAF filter.

Some specialist pollen filter suppliers do a generic filter as per the part you have been supplied at either £5 or £6, depending on whether you go for a charcoal activated filter or a basic pollen filter.

I will get back to you with up dated news, a I get it.

Cheers,

Re: pollen filter

Hello consur,

Two different sources have looked into the cabin filter from Steyr Puch/Mercedes Benz.  I was extremely surprised at prices from them both!  One quotes £130, available in the UK and the second quotes £149, available from Europe and after including p&p and VAT, the price is close to £195 ; both are plus VAT and p&p.  One would think, these are coated with Gold.

As I had, mentioned in the thread above.  A similar sized filter is fitted to DAF trucks, available at £9.90 plus VAT; to me that make the most cost effective way to go.  Should you want to take this route, the part number you want is:  136 21241791192.  This filter is also available from generic filter suppliers, one of many is Mann filters and their part number is CU2534, I do not know their price.

Before committing to buy the filter, ask the supplier to see, if it will satisfactorily fit your vehicle.

Please let us know how you get on, I am sure other members might want to take up a similar option if it works out.

Cheers,

Re: pollen filter

Fixwin has pointed out that on earlier Gs there is nothing to prevent water going through the grill and soaking a filter whereas on later Gs there is.  On my 1991 G there is a plastic plate deflecting any rain coming through the part of the grill overlying the air intake but this is not the orginal bonnet or grill (owing to crash damage).
ORC catalogue now obtained and this specifies the 25 x 15 filter for vehicles -11/00  (on page 46).  I assume this means till late 2000 but it's a bit cryptic.
Investigations continue.

Re: pollen filter

I have just to-day received another price form an Austrian supplier of €120 plus p&p to the UK mainland.

I agree with fixwing38's comments on rain water entering the earlier G-Wagens' in which case the cheap alternative of DAF trucks filter being used as a substitute is out.  The ORC filter is not made of paper and is capable to coupe with being damp.  ORC claim, the filter for all models, early or otherwise.

At present the ORC filter although pricey is the cheapest option and a filter fit for the purpose.

Re: pollen filter
Has anyone been able to source the one they use on the Entdecker? I believe it's made by PPR?

Re: pollen filter

I am supposing here. I do not see an Entdecker pollen filter to be anything special or particular from Mercedes supplied pollen filter or another well known oe supplier.

These being expensive to buy for what they are, If an Entdecker one is unique, I can not see it to be any cheaper than the ones available at the moment (circa €120)  for any one to warrant an Entdecker filter, in consideration what is available does not justify for its expense. I can not see an Entdecker one to be of special interest unless its sale price is some €20. In one of my threads above, I have shown the cheapest pollen filter I can find for a G- Class; I spent quite an effort to source this and NOT one showed interest in its price - basically for me it is an interpretation, no one is really bothered.

In a brief exchange with Entdecker personally, they in fact, informed me, in order to water proof the filter from the edges; they used duck tape to seal. So if you have particular advantage on the benefit of an Entdecker filter, please enlighten us. I have never heard of PPR and can not find any company in that name making filters.

Re: pollen filter

We appreciate your efforts on this one Rakesh.  When I have time I will try your parts numbers at the local motor factors and report back. Since my first post on this topic I have been to Spain and back with the cut down filter fitted to my 463 and the reduction in dust ingress to the cabin has been significant and there has been NO appreciable reduction in air flow.  It hasn't got wet and hasn't disinintegrated even though the cut edges are not sealed.

Re: pollen filter

Hello consur,

If,  I came across being complacent, please accept my apologises, crying  Rightly or wrongly, I always draw the conclusion that if people do not comment on a topic on the posted threads, they are frankly not interested. I perhaps have to work on my attitude to such responses, this I think will take some time. indecision

Now personally, I have no objection about the filter becoming wet or damp, this will eventually dry out. Any heavy water will simply drain downward and out the drain plug as per normal. Wetness has been of concern with some contributors. Maybe this could be of concern as a possible source of bad odour in which case it is time to change the filter. In service this is done annually anyway but these filters when the dealers charge some £120 or so, is frankly over priced in my opinion.

What you have done, I am guessing would be at a tenth of the price and as you have proved it works wet or dry. It would be interesting to learn what the Entdecker filter costs, I still have not found the manufacturer or supplier. I look forward to your factor results, my only concern is there are small dimensional variations to these filters so in terms of fitment in the housing - I do not know.

Re: pollen filter

At last enlightened

Found it on the 460's and early 463's!!! smiley

It does not show a picture for the pollen filter but when you select the grille above it in the bonnet, shown on group 88 on EPC it list the grille and then a part without an item number and says Pollen Filter - Accessory - Do not order from DBAG!!! sad

Very helpful!!! Not, i would assume that although the MB Factory recognise that there is a filter available that is designed for the early G's, that MB dont supply it but it would lead me to think as Rakesh was thinking that the route to purchase would lie with Steyr Puch and their parts operation in Graz. wink

Not much further forward but i can stop trawling through EPC now and get on with something else!! cool

Over to you Rakesh!!!! crying
