I was thinking of using Wynns (stop oil leakage  fluid which mixes with the lube oil)  to deal with some minor leakages around the engine (M103- Petrol 300Ge). Does any reader have any experience ( good or bad)  or adverse effects noted  through using this products?

Re: Oil Leaks

 Hello Leonidas,

Stop leak additives work on the principle by making oil seals supple again, thus regain its sealing properties.  There is also the possibility for the oil leak to worsen.  Should there be any damage to the seal, by using such an additive could weaken the damage and create a bigger tear, making the condition worse off.

Oil seal leaks are very rare on the OM103 engine.  Oil leaks are usually from rocker cover gaskets and, or the front cover of timing chain.  The additive would not have any effect on these types of seals.  You are better of addressing the problem by renewing the gaskets and seals.  The additives are more for the round oil seal.

Cheers,

Re: Oil Leaks

Hi Leon

I am sure the product is great for what, as Rakesh has said, it is intended for?

It is designed for round lipped oil seals like Front and Rear Crank Seals, Cam seals and the like, that have hardened with heat / age or lack of use. This product softens them up again and makes the supple and start to seal again. In this usage i can see it's benifits in the short to medium term but eventually replacement is the only option.

However from our communication, you suspect a leak more like a conventional gasket rather than a seal, such as Rocker gasket etc and i don't think it will work on that type of joint?

Not from my experience anyway, most of the rubber gaskets on the M103 are cheap enough and easy enough to swop anyway.

I can't see it having any effect on a head gasket that is passing oil and personally would not like to take the chance!!

Cheers
