A colleague of mine has a 460 sat in his shed for many years, a 300GD.   The engine threw a con rod about ten years ago.   The engine and box were removed and stripped and then left.  At some point another 617 was bought but is slightly different (see thread in technical section).   Muggins here has been asked to put it all back together. Expect many questions!   Nice to meet you all.

This is the wagen, as you can see from the layer of dust and muck its been sat for some time.   In front is the replacement engine.

Original M/Benz fog lamps, very valuable and rare to get hold of now - look after them.

 Are they?

I have a set in my basement.. I removed them from my 460 because compared to the modern (h3?) versions from the 461 they are pretty ineffective!

As mentioned above, its not actually mine, I have tried to buy it several times myself without success.   It'll get done though, theres nothing too taxing about puttting it back together. Life would be a bit simpler though if all parts were like-for-like!

All the best

Re: Not my G but putting it back together

UPDATE:

Sorry for taking so long to update this thread but progress has finally been made after several false starts.   After spending much time trying to make a 617 engine (see separate thread) from a saloon work we gave up with the arrival of a 617 from a donor G-Wagen.  This 617 had a few oil leaks to sort out but went in this afternoon and has been connected to all ancillaries before I ran out of time.   Tomorrows job is too fire up the old girl for the first time in about a decade.   Unfortunately I didn't have the camera with me but will endeavour to get some photos tomorrow.

Thanks to all who have contributed to other queries so far.

UPDATE #2 The donor engine was a pig to start and wouldn't run very well. I retimed the injection pump and now all is well. The G has had an MoT for a few weeks now and is in daily use pottering around, no big distance yet. The donor engine seems to be okay, only a bit of white smoke on start up. I will post some photos up if I remember to take some. Thanks for all your help. James
