HI everyone, Hola, Guten tag etc etc....

New member on the G forums here. I am on a few LR forums, some may recognise my name.  I've been a LR follower for quite a few years, currently have a Td5 90 & 110 built by myself, but I fancy something *different* to tinker with, and have had admiration for G's for years now, so will be on the look out for one.

Will probably sell the 90 to fund the G (edit: will have to sell the 90 to keep the wife happy.....)

Don't know what to go for, but a LWB diesel station wagon on a W463 chassis seems like a good base.  Will have to see what comes up.

Re: Newbie here... Hello all!

Meant to add, I'm just outside Swindon, Wiltshire. Spend a lot of time laning around here (there's loads of byways) and out on Salisbury Plain... where I've been this afternoon in fact. cool

Cheers

Re: Newbie here... Hello all!

HI Jamie and welcome to the forum.

We do have a play down at the Plain from time to time, and there a few members not far from you. Will you be using your G as a day 2 day runner or for pure off roading? We have had a number of LR owners pop on, but please be warned....... G's can be expensive when things go wrong, which to be fair is a lot fewer times than a landy can.

463's very , very good vehicles, if your going for a LWB and you have young kids , the jump seats in the back are a must. Some very nice LWB's out there at the moment, don't be afraid to shout any question you may have, will alwasy be a smart arse on here who can answer it!Shift+R improves the quality of this image. Shift+A improves the quality of all images on this page.

once again welcome!

Re: Newbie here... Hello all!

you might find the w463 too much of a shock to the system after a Defender, I would try a w460 first, the earlier the better as they were the most basic [and the most sensible too]

Re: Newbie here... Hello all!

Welcome Jamie,

Two things I am interested in.

1) Your animated Avatar; did you animate it your self, if so how can one go about it. I would like to design one for my self if possible.

2) You may get some flak for having a Landie but please don't let get to you. Boys' be gentle with our new member. As Spider 1V has mentioned some in the club have Landies and I assure you, pies thrown at you Landie owners are sweet. Onto a more serious note, what can you comment on the older Landies and, or Range Rovers regarding parts availability?

I notice, in small measures certain parts (few in number but gradually increasing) are either becoming difficult to obtain or are on back order. I do not know how much you know about G-Wagens' but in brief there are three Chassis types in both Petrol and Diesel. Chassis W460 - first generation of G-Wagens, W463 - Second generation of G's and W461 - akin to the W460 but introduced after the W463, or at least that's how I saw them come in to the UK market. The W460 and W461 are almost similar; being a part time 4 X 4 and the front and rear diff locks activated from within the cab by Pull-plungers. The W463 is cosmetically different and having more creature comforts. This a permanent 4 X 4 and has a center diff lock and front and rear axle diff locks activated sequentially by console mounted switches.

We have our AGM coming up soon (details on the forum) please come and you can see and meet the various G's and great characters and some interesting modifications. I am sure Landie club members are no different.

Re: Newbie here... Hello all!

Hi all, thanks for the warm welcome.

I'm on a steep learning curve for the history and changes of the G through its life, but with all things mechanical like that, I'm a sponge, so hopefully will soon absorb it all!

I've been a landrover man all my life, got my first one when I was 15 (bought it off of my metalwork teacher at school from my saturday job sacking up coal!) and have had at least one ever since. Currently got a 90 and a 110 which I built from chassis up. regarding parts availability, pretty much everything is available for them thesedays, from the current 2.2 "puma" engine back to the series 1's. the really old S1's aren't quite as easy to get some bits for, but there are certain dealers (like Dusfold Landrovers in Surrey) who have amassed a large collection of bits.

I went to look at an old (A reg, 1984 I think it was) SWB 460, but it's missing its engine and a lot of interior trim, and tinworm has taken ahold of a lot of the panels and doors, so I think I'll give that one a miss.

I think with funds it'll be an early 460 model I might end up with, although I would prefer a newer one, as it'll get used as a "car" more than an off roader, so we'll just have to see what comes up.

my avatar... i just googled various .gif pictures and took a fancy to that one. I'm on several landrover and military forums, so have a few different avatars that I use. feel free to use this one if you want it... PM me your email address and i'll send it over (although it might get confusing if we've got the same picture smiley)

Cheers

Jamie
