Hi everyone, just joined the club. Eddy from Dublin looked over a g463 lwb 300 ge for me in Carlow and I drove it home a week later. That was 2 wks ago. To say i am besotted with it is an understatement.  I am really interested in the famous diesel conversions that one of you guys undertake.  Eddy tells me that a "magician" turns a humble G into a snarling monster. What is the approx. build time for same and what are the options available. Pardon my ignorance in these matters, I know that 2.5 tonne plus takes a lot of shifting but Eddy reckons you guys have it sorted. Love the physical presence of the G ( neighbour says he would`nt spit on  range rover after seeing the G in the flesh) but ideally I would love some more punch.

Sean

Hi SeanD and welcome.

Congrats on the new addition, Yes Eddie is right about the 'turning the handle and get a snarling G , and take a look at the posts Axel has suggested. Though if you want a 'roaring' G anything with a V8 should do it. cheeky

Re: new member.

Only 'snarling monster' conversion would be to a large petrol V8! You have a 300GE? I strongly recommend you drive a diesel before converting away from petrol - and get genuine fuel comparison figures. Diesel G comparitively slow and not so much more economical to justify the cost of conversion. Much better to fit an LPG kit to your current engine if it's the extra mpg you're after.

Just re-read your post, having gone off 'half-cocked', and see that you're probably after improved power not mpg. Depends on what use of your G. For towing large objects and off-road TD may be worthwhile conversion but for most other situations don't think you'll see much real difference between 300 turbo diesel and petrol. And IMHO petrol is nicer to drive on-road.

Re: new member.

Hi , the engine is the 3ltr petrol auto. The auto box is very slow to change up even on motorway. I understand it has to contend with the massive weight so i reckoned that the newer turbo diesels would have the torque band to cope better . The petrol is returning 15 to 18 mpg and i see from the threads that the diesel refits can return 25+.

Re: new member.

the om606 diesel conversions do offer a huge increase in torque and in theory at least can run on recycled vegetable oil based fuels, Not cheap though,

Hi Sean

I know the 463 you bought. That is indeed a nice bus. I have a 300D and i can tell you for sure that your 300GE is a lot quicker.

If I was you, before commiting to an engine swop, I'd first see if you can get the existing engine checked and tuned up. The 300GE should be fairly nippy even with the 2t body weight.

Welcome to the club and congrats on a good investment.
