Hi,

Just paid up and registered after lurking for a year or two. Had a swb 1990 460 300d and changed for a 1994 300d lwb about a year ago. Still need just a little more power!. Very tempted by all I read regarding OM606A conversions. Country is full of late 90's E300 diesel cars rusting away with a lot of life left in engines. Anybody in Ireland (similar to Axle) carrying out this conversion.

Re: New from Dublin

welcome ,i am picking up two gentlemen flying in from the emerald isle from our local airport for a day visit to the workshop and some test drives  along with a 'booked' visit to mr.Bruegger and his wonderful things . the invitation is open, don't suffer the 603 or 617 non turbo forever there are options. 602/662a ,605a or 606a ,all have plenty of power and are good on fuel the recently finished 'speed six' 463 lwb is giving its owner over  30 mpg on a run (staying legal) and over 25 running around (not hanging around) .

Re: New from Dublin

Originally bought 460 for play as I'm into classic cars etc. Had a lot of fun off road and decided that if this car was slightly more powerful it could replace daily driver/family car. Just as I made this decision a LWB 463 300D came up for sale at a very reasonable price.Nearly 200,000 miles on clock, but service record and only two previous owners. It still needed some work ie. rear springs, shocks, tyres, top shock mounts welded, cabin heater control valve, but we could do all work ourselves. Still needs wiper spindle replaced (passenger side only, drivers must have been replaced) but it's not letting in water - packed with grease and large rubber washer. Passed our NCT test (MOT) no problem.

Have discovered that 7/9 seats very useful for collecting daughter and friends from teen disco etc. and try to find excuses to use it for work, but sadly not as big inside or as fast as our re-mapped T5 transporter, so limited work use.

Re: New from Dublin

Welcome to the club.

I owned a 92 300gdl for 10years. Great vehicle if a little underpowered. Early 463s were fantastic

Engine conversion would make yours a daily driver.

Re: New from Dublin

Hi signs.

A number of Irish owners in the club. I'm in Waterford with a 91 463 300D. Your right they are slow movers on the road butthis is the perfect weather for them. (speed don't matter in snow) I'm communiting to Cork weekly and the G has never let me down regardless of the weather. Fixwin is based up North - not too far from you and specializes in G wagon restoration / rebuilds.

Best of Luck with it.

Derek

Re: New from Dublin
Hello Signs. I am in West Dublin and play around a lot with G's. I am about to replace my own OM617 (retro-fitted turbo) with an OM606 (non-turbo). Mechanical pump, straightforward auto. Hoping it's plain sailing. Customer waiting to do the same conversion when I am finished mine. I have to admit I have no appetite for the electronic options like OM606A, it sounds like Axel is the man for that. We should meet up and "kick tyres". Eddie.

Re: New from Dublin

There must be more Irish owners out there that we could do a kick tyre convention followed by traditional lubrication.

Re: New from Dublin

hi eddie, the 606a can be made totally non-electronic as per your 606 n/a mecahnical pump no egr valves and pressure operated wastegate  - simple as a lister petter dumper.. ! the only pain with the auto is unless you get an aftermarket controller you are stuck with the 4 speed auto with a 1 to 1 top gear ,the 463 i did recently from 300 petrol auto to 606a manual 6 speed was a case in point-  i ran it up on the ramps with a 4 speed auto and it was doing 3400 rpm at 70 mph and 4000 rpm at 80 mph that is horrible for cruising speed on the m -way or cruising on A roads in general it will chew some diesel also.  all the 60x engines are a joy and i will look forward to your reviews of driving your g with the new motor.

Re: New from Dublin

Somehow managed to miss all these replies to my original post despite checking site daily!. Eddy, saw your green G on Lucan bypass recently. Started to explain to my son about your recent adventure to Morocco but when I saw his eyes light up I had to disappoint him and say 'no way', especially in something as gutless as our 463 lwb auto 300d. Is your website down?used to enjoy looking at photos and projects on it.

Re: New from Dublin

Also new, also Dublin based. And G less.  Looking for a used W463 automatic in good nick. Expect I will have to import form UK as I see so few for sale here in Ireland?  Advice welcome on that.  Driving a W124 1995 now, looking to switch over to the 463, for general use.  Thanks, doqal

Welcome doqal. Much G activity going on in Lucan. I swap daily drives between my 1983 300GD LWB with OM662A, my 1984 300GD SWB and my 1994 W124 200TE. Sorry no 463's around that I know of for sale.

Re: New from Dublin

Hey Eddie,

Thanks for the warm welcome. I drive a 95 W124 myself, my 3rd in a row.  Keen to find a 3 door automatic G Wagon, expect I'll have to import it form the UK.  Just started the search in earnest so lets see what comes up over the next 6 months.  Did you import or find them here?

Re: New from Dublin
They are hard to find in Ireland. Original Irish W460s are possibly the holy grail with little salt damage compared to UK vehicles. My SWB is Irish, my LWB is ex UK. SWB auto 463 in Ireland for sale? Tough one, best to look in UK. Ask members here for assistance when viewing. Come visit 0872546812 Eddie.

from a parallel forum Eddie, this is for sale in Wicklow

salt is an issue for sure. any way to treat it, to stall it?  what gets damaged the most, the tin?  or worse?

The 460s lack the plastic wheel arch liners if the 463s and therefore tend to rust in the rear quarters, but also, strangely, the lower part of the rear door. The suspension spring support plates/ turrets, as well as the springs themselves tend to rust away on either variant.

Regular jet washing of chassis and wheel arches as well as cavity wax inside door skins and wax protection underneath will help.

Re: New from Dublin

I'd say the price on that one is too strong for the Irish market, particularly for a petrol.

Beware leaking sunroof highly likely.

Have recently seen a 1993 ex UK needing rear top spring mounts and shock mounts AND the chassis tubes they mount on. Seems to be a bigger problem on 463's than on 460's. Others here have seen the same.

Wheel arch liners can (and should) be retrofitted to W460's.
