Hello everyone.

Im Jib and I work with Mercedes cars (not dealer) and have 5 Mercedes myself but more on that later possibly.

I need some advice, I have a customer who sadly died a few weeks ago and I was approched by his wife the other day asking if I could sell his Mercedes E class, then we got talking!

He severed in the Falklands war and was part of the clean up after the war, he brought back with him a late 70's SWB G wagen convertible LHD and 24 volt twin batteries. This G was an Argentine military spec vehicle.

The G is now with the son in Scotland so its being well cared for, but I have a new boxed 2.3 low compression G wagen engine which needs to be sold.

So my question is should I ebay it? and is it worth anything? This is a not for profit situation on my part so please dont assume im in this for the money because this isnt the case, im trying to help a neighbour / customer.

Many thanks and one day I will have a G!!

Hi

You have and odd and very specific engine there...assuming it is the same 24Volt unit as in the Scottish G.

The M115.974 2.3 litre Inline 4 Cylinder 24 Volt Carb engine was only used in the G and in small numbers in the 70's and early 80's.

Only 1120 230G's were ever built with this engine in 24Volt.

1015 of these for the Argentine Junta and a few are still strewn around the Malvinas today.

Even if it is the more common M115.973 12 Volt unit which the Argentines only had 26 built it is still not a common unit with only 4760 being built Worldwide and only 15 of these being brought into the UK between 1979 and 1982.

I guess it can be converted from 24 Volt to 12 Volt quite easliy but i don't see the point? I also could never see anybody "downgrading" a G from any other engine to that one, as you will know by the 80's the M115 engine was very old school technology even by MB standards of maximising their engines life spans! In this version its 88bhp output was low even by this engines standards.

Maybe as an upgrade to an M115 engined W115 200 or a replacement for a tired W/T/C123 230 it may have a use but will be underpowered for the 123 series i would think?

I figure for somebody doing a resto on an original 230G back to factory standards its priceless, other than that its nearly worthless in my opinion...

A short extract...

"Connoisseurs of cigars disagree as to whether the quality of a cigar may be determined from the appearance of its ash. Cigar ash may be mixed with chalk to make a dentifrice or tooth powder. It may also be mixed with poppy seed oil to make paint in shades of grey.

The fictional detective Sherlock Holmes was an expert in the study of cigar ash and wrote a monograph, “Upon the Distinction between the Ashes of the Various Tobaccos”, about it. This expertise was used in his cases such as A Study in Scarlet, The Boscombe Valley Mystery and The Hound of the Baskervilles. This is repeatedly used as an example of deduction or the Baconian method in philosophical accounts of science and reasoning."
