Hi
I am a new member and i have a mereceds 300gd w640 lwb manuel. I have noticed movement in my front driver side wheel at 12-6 o clock. On inspection i  noticed the locking nut where loose and the locking washer totaly distroyed. I replaced the washer and locking nuts with new ones from mereceds, but have come across a problem- the last locking nut is not tightening fully it keeps getting loose just as it about to tighten against locking washer, likely cause i guess is the treads have gone on the cv joint- so i guess im in need of a cv joint for front drivers side.
I am based in the west midlands and have tried many places for cv joint but havent had any luck been informed many times that there end of line not stocking them anymore. Have inquired with mereceds, they dont seem to do cv joint on there own, instead sell a full section with drive shaft ..

   Can anybody please advise?
Put me in the rigth direction for source of part? likely cost? new/ used?

I am planning to replace CV joint Myself is there any thing i need to know or is it quite staright forward?

   Thanks

Re: need new cv joint 300gd 1988

Hello k4nda1,

Welcome to the GWOA and to our forum.

It is true CV joints are no longer available from Mercedes (M/B) dealers any longer.  It is ironic that M/B do not sell parts in kit form, i.e. take a clutch kit, usually consisting of a release bearing, clutch centre plate and clutch pressure plate. There is no listings of a kit, instead, each part has to be individually looked up to make up a kit.  Now some 'bean counter' at M/B; in order to move parts that otherwise would not has decided that the CV joint should be part od the driveshaft, hence one has to buy the whole part, obviously, more expensive on the whole to the customer.

I am providing a few CV joint and driveshaft specialists from whom some have definite  listings of CV's, some you have to enquire and the remaining can re-manufacture your old unit.

From what you say above, if the lock nut loosens upon tightening then there is definitely a thread problem, you will need a new CV joint.

Note:  the CV, nuts and locking washer are different for the W460 and W463 models.  In relative terms, the W460 are marginally smaller in diameter, hence so is the tool to tighten the nuts.  These are over £50.00 for the tool, which can be got from the dealer or directly from other sources that supply M/B tools.

Remove the nuts from the CV and visually examine the threads on the CV joint.  The threads should be neatly cut not rough, indicating thread damage.  Put on one nut and wind this to where the rough threads are.  At that point attempt to rock the nut as you did, the wheel from a 12 O'clock and 6 O'clock position.  Should there be even a slight movement, it could confirm wear or damage.

It could be, just thread damage where the lock nut sits and the rest being fine; should that be the case and allowing that there be space to fit one extra lock washer and a third nut, fit the third nut to see if the third nut will tighten.  Doing this exercise, once you are satisfied the nut is adequately tightened, check out the wheel bearing play, to confirm there is no damage to it due to the loose CV nuts.  Whist checking for the wheel bearing play, do check for any excessive play at the hub; play here would suggest king pin bearings need replacing.

A word of caution, if the nut has been tightened and you do have place at the bearing, do not try to tighten to take up the play, you may achieve to remove any play but this will not last long, the additional force will only serve to collapse the bearing cage resulting in total failure of the bearing.

I have not used from any of the sources I have suggested, if you are ordering the CV, do not automatically assume it will be correct, check it out thoroughly.

Cheers,

Rakesh

GKN Make a replacement joint for the 460 G-Wagen which I think is Part No. 22690 if this helps.

Hello Rakesh

Thankyou for the advise, it has been a great help.

I have managed to locate myself a cv  joint for the front drivers side, it arrived the other day.I will be having attempt at taking off the old one, and hopefully the  new CV will be the correct fitting. If all is well i will then replace all the bearings / kingpin bearings and new hub seals.

I have also ordred 3 seals for the hub from MB- (seal holder/gasket x2)  but not to sure if i need to purchase the seal holder? the ones on the g class seem fine to look at ,apart from the fact there is signs of grease leakage on both font hubs- hence the idea of replacing the seals.

Also the locking nut on the new CV joint is totally different from the MB standard locking nut.Im guessing it  would be wise to stick with the locking nut thats been provided with the CV.

Thanks again mate for you support and help. It  has been great  joining the GWOA knowing that theres people out there that own g wagons, as you dont see many around and of course without a say the first hand advise avaliable as i have searched many internet sites trying to find out stuff on G Class and have found it quite limited compared to many other models.

Hello Sati,

Use the lock nuts as is, on the G-Wagen, do not use the nut supplied with the CV. Check that the threads are the same though before stripping yours down.

You do not need to replace the seal holder, the old one can be re-used.

Otherwise the other listed parts are just fine.

One note. When you dis-assemble the hub, keep the shims as they are on the top and bottom king pins and re-fit them as you take them out.

Cheers,
