 Hiya,

I have a 2003 W463 G500 LHD with the american tow bar but want to change to a European one as i do not trust the integrity of towing a heavy load to just one pin!

Can anyione suggest a specialist in kent for this. I'm in Knockholt, Sevenoaks

Thanks

Andy

 Hi Andy

The reciever style hitch you have on your USA spec G is pretty handy for fitting other hitch attachments (like bike carriers) and is easily removable to stop it 'ploughing' the ground if you go off road.

The retaining pin used on these hitches is 16mm (5/8") hardened steel which has a breaking strength of around 20 tons so unless it falls out you will be ok  with even the heaviest loads.

These type of hitches are very widely used in the states without any problems so unless you are going to have sleepless nights over it I do not think there will be any benefit to changing it.

Thansk for the replies.

It's the dolly pin holding the steel pin in i'm worried about. If that goes or breaks the steel pin will work it's way loose.

The US ones are not strictly legal in Europe i believe so if there was an 'incident' it could cause a problem.

Anybody seen a safe US design where the reciever steel pin is not purely kept in place by a dolly pin . The one i have is held by a padlock but again not 100% confident,

I'll also go down tosee tridnet in Maidstone to see what they have and check the ebay one also.
