My new G doesn't exist!
In october I bought my 290 GTD in Germany. It was owned by herr Musper, someone who worked for MB in Stuttgart and was responsible for G wagens somehow. He was pretty modest but his wife proudly told me that they called him "dr.G"
I knew it was an early 290 GTD that I bought (the documents said it was put on the road on april 1997)
In order to get it on the road in Belgium you need to follow a homologation procedure to get it road legal. This is pretty staightforward. You book an appointment with MB homologation service. You present your car with all the original documents and the put an extra ID plate in the car with a european PVG number and print out a european certificate of conformity.
Pronto, now your car is road legal and ready to insure in the whole of europe. (i did it two times before!)
But this time they called me in to their office to tell me there was nothing they could do for me, because the car doesn't exist in their system.
It was apparently built in october 1996 and there was no ABE issued for this car's chassis number.
According to MB in belgium this was a pré production G that was used for testing or a prototype or for homologation or something...
...In any case now I need to do a unique vehicle procedure that will take months...It's the same procedure as if I would have built a car from scratch and put in on the road
So I won't be cruising soon!
I sent a mail to "DR.G" asking about the true history of my vehicle, but I didn't get any response yet.
Hi G'
your G' vin number should be on data plate on the air intake in the engine bay and stamped in the chassis just behind the rear of front wheel on the passenger side...it must have that for the factory build records....
Hi G. Glad to hear you got it sorted. Hope you get it plated soon/ph

KAFKA! The problem turned out to be a burocratic one....
All the data of my vehicle was indeed available and accessible. But the european certificate of conformity issued for my type of vehicle dated from after the production date of my vehicle. That is the only problem? So I had an appointment today with the Belgian institute thats arranges homologation. It's something like an MOT station but from the government. They were very helpful and friendly (and they liked the G a lot!). So they weighed it, measured it and tested it. Everything was ok for them I payed 118€ for the Belgian Conformity procedure and now I have to wait 3 weeks to 3 months for my certificate of conformity to arrive (a long time to issue a piece of paper!)...then I can insure it and be cruisin'.
thx
