Mercedes 230GE W460 Engine swap
Hi Everyone,
I just bought a second G for fun (he says) it is acutally a LHD model and is a 1984 230GE, the Gearbox is a 4 speed auto, model number720111 02 006493
I want to mate this to an OM605 Turbo diesel
Will this work, really hope you can help as I really want this engine in my G

Hi there Don...yr 460 auto has the early starter position [rhs from drivers seat]...gearbox will only mate to 616 or 617 diesel ,not a good idea.[ALL modern MB starters are other side]
OM 605 another of the all time great MB engines ,20v head on a proven bottom end,BUT pump is electric govenor and its own autobox [v.good , a 5 spd ,o/drive, but also electric ,it can be done but its 'A' levels.Any left hand non electric auto is 4 speed direct top and you will be revving your balls off at 75mph [Even early 463 auto's suffer from 4spd direct top auto...just rubbish to drive]
SO where are we ?? Great engine but hard to mate to 5spd auto unless you are very good [see other forums]....
therefor its a new pedal box,clutch master and slave [easy s/h parts,easy to fit] a s/h clutch flywheel and 5 or 6 speed box /shifter also cheap and easy to source.
RESULT = economy + POWER + sensible rpm @ 85mph -605 i/c t/d conversion is favored by dutch for tax reasons...many succesful ones described on forums...trawl the web ,its all there. On this site see Axels musings....he really knows...
PS am away for 2 weeks so my own ramblings will be suspended...pro tem !!

The 2.9 Turbo diesel engine from a 1999 Sprinter will bolt up to yourAuto and work well. It take a fair bit of wiring but is worth the effort. Apart from running with 4.88 diffs it transforms your G into a great towing vehicle.

I think your G must have originally had a later box with the starter on the left, because a sprinter engine is a 602 which has starter on left. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Don will have to change to a later auto (463 4 speed without eletronics) or change to manual.

mnnn, never had one, but I thought a 230e had lh starter same as 602/603 etc etc, only the old 5 cyl 300d, 4cyl 240d and the 6 cyl 280e had rh starter?
You might be right, I don't know, but if it is on the left, he's sorted!
