Hi Guys

I have an electrical problem that has happened a few time but seems to be getting worse.

After the truck has been running for an hour or so it loses all electrics except for the battery light coming on, the engine stays running as its a diesel but as soon as it is stopped it won't start again as the starter motor is dead as well. If it is left to go cold it will start again and most of the time be okay but sometimes if the lights are turned on it will do the same again.

I think this must be a bad connection somewhere, maybe on the back of the ignitin switch but before I start ripping the dash out has anyone any other idea of where or what it could be.

Thanks Geoff

Re: Losing all electrics

When that red battery light is on, is when your alternator is not charging. The engine will keep running on as it is a diesel which does not require electrical power to run it.

The battery looses its power over the non charging period hence, you are unable to start your vehicle after. To confirm, check your charging when the red light comes on. Check for wire security to and from the alternator. You might need to repair your alternator, at minimum you probably can get away with renewing the voltage regulator.

Find a local auto electrical place to repair the alternator.

The red battery light only comes on when I lose electics, ie the headlights go out and nothing electrical will work. The battery is not flat. After an hour or so it will start up again and be okay for a day or so then do it again. It is more like a bad connection somewhere thats overheating and losing contact, I will trace the wiring and find it but I was just asking incase someone might have an idea of where to look

Re: Losing all electrics

I have eventually sorted this problem out.

It was a corroded connector block under the air filter housing. Just need to sort the pitifully slow engine out now sad
