Hi All,

Just went to use my main key (the one that flicks out) that looks like a black oblong box and it would not work, (though it did set the alarm off) change the batteries and , again it would not work. Got my second key out and worked perfectly! So, if I want to get a new key, that will activate the alarm and central locking is it:

a) A simple process - you know, down to the dealer and they give you a new one?
or
b) Amass a group of; dwarf, elves, wizards a few hobbits and then set off in a Modor direction, facing various quests, treachery, love and a final battle to claim the key of all keys?

Many thanks

Re: Keys,

Option B sounds the best route by far laugh

Option A is the truth after proving your name, address, photo ID, utility bill, inside leg, eye colour, photo of your granny in the bath etc....and also empty your wallet....around £180 ish crying

If you consider your key as scrap, then there is a 75% chance i can fix it. Unless it has been submerged in water then very little goes wrong with them.

The usual fault is the button that you press to activate comes adrift by one or all four of its legs that fasten to the circuit board.enlightened

If thats the case its a very simple re solder job, now the catch....angry

The key has to split in half and Herman usual has a habit of bonding them together

60% Come apart fine, 30% Come apart and will mend back OK, 20% Destroy, the good news now is you can usually buy a new case from eBay for £5 and off you go, 10+ years ago that was not an option....surprise

I reckon i have fixed well over 200 of that type like this and they usually last many years, i have fixed many at the roadside and few that the good keys have been hidden by toddlers and a couple after dogs have had them....so there is hope yes

So if you want me to have a go a can PM you my address or we can meet up next time your up, as long as i have a soldering iron, some solder and a pair of long nose pliers we can do it on the bar top?

Re: Keys,

Is there not a re-syncing process to try out before all the expensive fixes? Like on some other models...does the manual not say?

Re: Keys,

Its worth a try for nowt

In my experience they only usually need re syncing if either the batteries have been out or flat in the remote for days, the mirror has been changed or the vehicle battery has been flat or changed and been left disconnected for days etc

But give it a try...do you feel lucky....well do ya

Re: Keys,

I think Spiders only has a Transponder ignition switch ro recognise the old style flip out key, Stevo yours must be the later EIS type with the more modern key?

Without seeing from memory a little sketchy but i am not sure now if it even has the lights in the mirror on that model?

Does not show them or any in the door handle...will have a look when we meet up next week...uuupppp narth

Re: Keys,

HI all,

Well, now back from my jaunt , killed a few orc's and the like and have found out that the quest was not as bad as I thought! V5C, passport and £195! Takes about a week and the only thing they require is that the person ordering and paying must also be the person on the V5C. So ones wife could not pop down and order it. The key I have is the old W124, no sensors, that I can see, on the door lock, but a red and green on on the rear view mirror. Many thanks for your comments, advice.

So now onto the comments...

@Nedvaughn.......(shaking head.... very slowly) Now why would I need to get something that runs on the black stuff? Next you will be suggesting I get a Defender with teeth on! (Yes we all know that's your defender)

@PX - Yup! You have that right! Though there are some members on here who think you may have mis spelt Canute in reference to me. wink

@ Gavin - Will have a chat with you next week when I am 'ooppppp' north.

Re: Keys,

Note sure Spider is a King Canute if you believe an article in last weeks Sunday Times.

Big increases in diesel prices are on the way and it is only a bi product of petrol. The sums may soon add up for the G500 and remember you are never late in a V8!

Any one ever seen a Cosworth 460 G? Is it possible?

Re: Keys,

Got my remote working with new batteries but it now wont lock the car! I have what looks like an after market immobiler fitted. Its a credit card sized remote with 'Go' button and an unlock symbol. When you start the car without 'unlocking' using the credit card remote it shuts down after about 5 minutes. Usually beeps when setting etc. Its now stopped doing this but I cant lcok the car with the Mercedes remote. The car did have the abbertu disconnected but worked after this. I also was driving around with the relay/fuse holder down to look for water leaks. All sorted now. It was a removed bolt in the base of the battery tray and leaking screen seal.

Is there some sort of ant tip sensor fitted in the drop down flap that decided to stop it working ? When the immobiler thing was armed it actually started beeping when I was driving up a very steep hill and cut out?

Finally should I have one key for ignition and one for the door locks?

Re: Keys,

Hi

Depending on what keys you have with the car i sounds like in the above post you need to re sync your key.

I have attached a picture of the key types...

Yours is the top right and is the options inside the box labelled 66...

You should have had from the factory 2 standard flip keys and the credit card emergency key to operate the factory alarm / immobilsor system.

There are various versions of both keys depending on DAS1/DAS2 etc and chassis number.

All the mechanical door / steering locks should be the same key, it is common for the steering lock to be different as these tend to wear quicker due to the remote opening and a more complex tumbler system and also if the car has been stolen at any time.

If it is the steering lock key that is different than a replacement to the original matching key should be available for circa £71.50 + vat (A601 460 03 04 Ordered to chassis / key number)

If the steering lock is operated just by a standard conventional key and the only remote you have is the credit card one, then i would say that the steering lock is a temporary (get you home) replacement as they never came from factory like that. This will be the main reason why the system is not working correctly if so.

As far as the re sync goes, i think only the flip keys can be done like that, i dont think the credit card one can be?

If i am correct in my thoughts 1 or 2 flip keys are needed and also a steering barrel to get you back to 100%. Flip keys are £219 + vat each and i think you really need to have the circuit board colour to order them ..... not sure how you do if they are missing! (A463 760 05 06 Ordered to chassis / key number)

Hope this helps

Gav

Re: Keys,

Hey Gav. Thanks for filling me in. Yes I have the ignition barrel key which is a flip key on the remote. It has started working (locking and unlocking with the lighets infront of the rear view mirror flashing). I still dont understand how the credit card is supposed to work. Car still cuts out after a few minutes with the alarm beeping. Starts up right away, but pressing buttons does not always stop the beeping or prevent cut-out. Anyway it works and just drove thru part of Snowdonia. Some mild of roading done as my tyres are Continental 4x4 Contact. No good on mild mud at all.

So can I get a door key from a normal key cutter/auto locksmith  as normal?

I think they have to see the numbers on the lock barrel. Can they do it if I give them the chassis number only?
