 Hi,

Hope you can help.

I did a search for insurance but it only came up with some very old threads and the insurance companies do not cover a LHD import.

Can anyone recommend a few companies to get me started??/

Thanks in advance

Drew

Re: Insurance for G500 LHD

I've just had to get cover for a drive home.

1500 miles per annum, 42 year old no accidents or convictions and 5 years no claims bonus

£430 !!!!!

Please tell me I can get it for less than that.

Re: Insurance for G500 LHD

Off the top of my head, I can't remember what I pay, but I'm pretty sure its below 300 for the year, fully comp, no mileage restrictions, etc, etc. If its of any use, I use NFU. There was a recent post on this topic in November I think where there were other suggestions. With regard to what side the steering wheel is on, I'm pretty sure that it is irrelevant given your demographics. Good luck/ph

For some reason, an LHD American import from europe blocks out loads of Insurance companies. (i rang about 4 today)

I'll check out the thread from November.

Maybe the american element is the key. we imported ours from germany and had no problems whatsoever getting cover. good luck/ph

Is your car in the UK now? Just a thought, perhaps you could try Allen and Allen? They insure rare/unusual cars for a okay price, not particular cheap or expansive.

Re: Insurance for G500 LHD

What year is the LHD, is there any additions/subtractions that have been made to the car, is it an import (personal) and finally are you near any major city? It is surprising that the NFU are that expensive (I am paying £820 fully comp, no mileage limit, SDP, off roading (which is covered if there are no time trials) and I have had a claim (the wife) and speeding (me).

Something you or they are not telling us? :)

Re: Insurance for G500 LHD

It's all a bit odd really.  The car is a 2003 and standard. Imported in July. i'm in Kent.

I've insured plenty of cars in the past from my current address and employment and i get very low prices on higher value cars, in fact usually dirt cheap if limited mileage classic car.

I like to think i'm pretty clued up and make a point of paying the correct price, for some reason i am not in this case.

Sureterm no longer insure these cars on their 4 x 4 policy (last 6 months)

Spider, do you have a contact at NFU that knows the cars i could contact?

Hi drewtee,

try calling patrick govier at the alton nfu branch (01420 83516). that's the chap we use and he knows what a 500 is and should be able to help you. You're right, it doesn't make any sense otherwise.

good luck,
phileas

Re: Insurance for G500 LHD

OK Update.

Thanks for everyones assistance. At the end of many phone calls it turned out that Steve at Marlow NFU would have been the cheapest, but i ended up staying with Adrian flux which were the same price as Steves quote but limited mileage. The only reason i stayed with AF was that cancelling would have cost £70 and i will not do more that the 5k limited anyway.

On renwewal i'll be contacting Steve at NFU and likely go with them.

Cheers all

Re: Insurance for G500 LHD

I have a LHD G500, my policy is with NFU taken out two weeks ago from Patrick as quoted here, 10K 5 years NCD @ GBP560. Fully Comp.

This was 80 pounds more then Direct Line whom I insured with initially but then cancelled it after a week on 5 December due to their lack of knowledge about the car and the items of proof they were requesting. Per my discussion with their floor manager "Direct Line has been advised by Thatcham that None of the Mercedes cars have approved security system" therefore it is my duty to install a new security system etc etc etc.
I just had enough of the nonsense from Direct Line so I decided to cancel it within my 14 days of cooling off period. If they are this bad at point of sale then how will they be in case of a claim!
