So,went in to my local MB dealer last week to order two new keys after daughter broke one and lost the other. don't ask ! Took in pre picture driving licence and log book. Sorry sir, we need photo ID, passport will do. Went back following day with passport, driving licence, log, recent utility bill in my name and a letter from my tailor with my inside leg measurement. All went well, paid the bill and was told the keys should take a couple of days. However, I need to bring the vehicle that the keys are for into the dealer. Unfortunately not possible as don't have any keys. Was then told that i would have to low load it to MB, that if I was a member of the AA they would provide this service ! Not a problem I said, but how am I going to get the handbrake off and even then what about the steering lock. Sorry sir thats the rules from Germany. I left politely wondering how much some new keys were going to end up costing. However ,after speaking to a few people at MB a couple of days later , they eventually agreed to send out someone to my home at no cost. It really does happen , that sometimes the big boys will help.
Interesting. Being aware of some horror stories regarding replacement of keys, I asked the dealer (not MB main dealer) for two extra keys when bought my 300.
I was in his office when he phoned, I presumed the MB dealer, and asked for the keys over the phone.
Clearly some folks are mpore equal than others when it comes to keys.
I got the keys!
For future reference, I found the HUF key used in the 460 (maybe later models too?) available as blanks from these guys http://www.keytrader.co.uk/Vehicle-Keys/Car/HUF/HU22P-Key-Blank.html - much better quality than the MB replacement I bought too!
