I was thinking today that one of the things that this site could do with is a thread detailing many of the problems found across the range of vehicle with pictures and information to help potential buyers evaluate the seriousness of the problem.

I know that *some* of this stuff is covered in the general topics 'Part 1' and 'Part 2' - I'm thinking about perhaps another couple of pinned items along the lines of 'W46X - Watch out for...'

The issue I think is that in many cases the problems are not outwardly obvious and some can be hugely expensive to fix (as many of us know to our cost!)

So, I'm thinking here about things that come only with knowledge about the vehicle - like rotten rear shock perches, or the fact that tie rod ends often can't be replaced separately, or the fuel sender breaking  rather than more general electro-mechanical/ things to do on a test drive guide that is covered in the general guides.

What say you all?

A very sound idea - I expect most long term owners could start a list.

Some items would be illiminated with a fresh MOT but for example the dreaded wiper spindles, heater motor and  windscreen scuttle rot would not. A guide cost to each of the jobs would help buyers as well.

I can make a list of all the things I have not replaced, renovated, repaired or restored over the last ten years as it is much shorter the the list of things I have done. Having said that I have had more fun with the car than any other in 44 years of driving.

Re: Ideas for 'Buying A G' section of the site

I've had a go at the first one in the series  www.gwoa.co.uk/forum/buying-g-things-watch-out-rear-shock-perches-all-models

This will naturally evolve I'd guess, but I've started with a format and some headings that I thought mige be useful to someone approaching it for the first time. I'm not precious about it though, so comment/ critique is welcome (for content/ advice as well as layout).

Ideas for others in the series:

Heater Blower
Wiper Spindles
Body Corrosion:Rear
Body Corrosion:Wings and sills
Body Corrosion: Other
Fuel System (tank, sender, lines)
Seals
Gauges, bulbs and misc electrical
Front axel and bearings
Diesel
 - OM617
 - OM603 etc.

I agree it is a good idea but without supporting photos, in my opinion would lack the impact . The rotting shock absorbers mounts are a relatively new issue on G's.

To balance stevos comments, if we list the 'Landies' faults too, this could redress your concerns.

 What a great idea.

Could we make it that its a 'member only' benifit? i.e you have to be a subscribed and paid up member?

Could do it by:

Year
Model
Engine
Common faults to look for
How to fix
How much???? (!)
