Got to be a 463 and cheap.I am not fussy for this one so high milage and scruffiness isnt an issue.

Diesel or LPG/Petrol?Any advice.

In my opinion, if it relative economy you are after, then the obvious choice is the Diesel.  The 463's Diesel performance is so much better than the 460's but compared to the Petrol , it is a little sedate but by no means borring.

LPG conversion is for Petrols' only.  Results in economy with a very marginal drop in performance compared to Petrols', but if that is what you want, you can easily switch to runing on Petrol untill the itch wears off and switch back to LPG runing.

Petrol is fine if you are performance oriented, but live with the relative high fuel consumption.

Note if ecomony is you sole criteria, then the G-Wagen or any other 4x4 cross country vehicle is not for you.

I think you'll just have to accept whichever variant fits within your budget as it's unlikely there will be that many to chose from. If you're doing big miles then you wouldn't be buying a G so presumably the small difference in mpg between a diesel an a petrol won't make for any significant savings. I would suggest that service history and provenance are the things to look for first, then rust . If you find two G's in your budget with the same history and in the same condition, buy the diesel. If only because it'll be easier to sell on again.

Re: I am thinking of getting back into ownership.

I had a 463 6 cyl diesel but found it a bit sedate for me.
I had  a few 460 petrols which I found pretty poor on fuel and rarely got 15mpg.
never had a 463 petrol so wouldnt mind knowing a bit more about those.

Hi Andy
If you think you had poor  MPG on a 460 you will be horrified with the 463 petrol ..the only clock on the dash that moves faster than the speedo is the fuel guage moving from right to left. 10 mpg around town 14/16 on a run...you might get 18mpg at 56/60mph on the motorway (not the M25)

I agree with fixwin that the economy is not wonderful, but didn't find my 300 Petrol 463 that bad. Even so, its so smoooooooooth that you easily get addicted to it and will foregive it for drinking a little too much of the old juice. No diesel can compare on this front. If you haven't driven one yet, try a 300 petrol and then see some of the others here who have converted them (successfully I may add) to run on LPG if you're still after economy. good luck/ph

Re: I am thinking of getting back into ownership.

I usually get 14.7-15L/100km (19mpg) on my M104 engined G320, when I drive on the motorway with a very boring manner (±57mph, rarely reaches 60). But it needs about 20L/100km (14.1mpg) in town and about the same when I drive at ±110mph (NOT in the UK) on the motorway.

You could also have a look the fuel consumption figures of my OM603 300GD over a distance of over 2 thousand miles :D Not a bad number at all! My cruising speed on that thing was about ±120km.

I fancy the 300 petrol with LPG. Cheeper, faster, smoother, mostly Automatic.Im sure they must be equal to or better than the 280.I was not unhappy with the 280 consumption..you just get used to it.My old  300d 463 only got 22-23mpg.

Re: I am thinking of getting back into ownership.

andyc, grab the 300 ges on autotrader @ 5200 stg. and take it to battersea autogas centre. ask for ibrahim,he is the BEST lpg centre i have ever met...i have seen him working on a ml63 amg conversion. the 300 ge uses the 103 mechanical injection system which is very very very hard to get running right on lpg.

as i said above, if you buy a G, better off buying one without the conversion and taking it straight to battersea autogas.[you will end up waisting loads of money if you take another route...]

good luck.

btw, my ruby had an lpg conversion fitted before i moved back to cyprus. it completely messed up the idle, throtle control, mass airflow meter, sensor, idle controller... you want to know what it cost to put right inc the lpg conversion install and initial removal. the price of that swb 463 on autotrader.

Re: I am thinking of getting back into ownership.

that one has gone, and not suprised !!

jmorris is selling his 300 GES. but it aint cheap !! but its had lots spent on it. pm him.

this G takes my fancy....if you are after a bit of an overland looking G. its worth the money. a set of koni or bilsteins and a set of orc springs to bring the height back. it would look fab with a bit of money spent on it.

or be patient.... but looking at the weather conditions in the uk 4x4's are selling at premium rates

manual ge300 delete the cat if its pre 1992 and you should see 20mpg provided you don't live in a congested city.
