Huge transmission issues.... HELP!

Doing 75 miles an hour the car suddenly reduced speed (As if the car stalled) but upon pulling over I realized the truck was running just fine. I put it into gear and let out the clutch... nothing. No movement what so ever not even an ounce of effort. The gearbox made no grinds or any real signs of typical destruction, and the pedal pressure was just as strong as always.

I Just fired up the g today and went through the gears. I noticed 4th was really hard to engage. When I finally got it, the car stalled out.

This tells me, the clutch is good, the transmission on the other hand has an issue.

Symptoms:
1. All gears are easy to get into except 4th.
2. 4th gear, when "engaged" (quotes because the truck doesn't feel like it's actually in gear) will move and stall the truck out. When I have the Transfer case selected to Nuetral, and the truck in 4th gear, the intermediate shaft spins.
3. With the clutch in, 4th gear wont grind when selected. With the clutch out, 4th gear grinds when selected. HOWEVER, all other gears will not grind.

Here is my question to you. What does this sound like to you? Shift forks? something else? Somewhat easily fixed? (I'm very mechanically inclined)

My next question is, if need be, where can I find a replacement gearbox?

Re: Huge transmission issues.... HELP!

Which gearbox/model?

5 speed box on a 460 then it would not surprise as that is a Getrag pile of smelly stuff. Still slowly fiddling on removing it from mine and putting a proper MB "iron box" van box as it should have had from factory. Mine rattled a lot and basically leaked oil so much that it died after me expecting the oil leak to be from the engine.. it was going really really well just before it died to prove how much friction there is in the gearbox!

Something is not sitting right here, Do you have drive in all other gears?  If not, the problem lies with the clutch given the information you have.  Remote prognosis is difficult enough but when a partial picture is painted it gets tricky.

When ever you have selected these gears, is the engine runining?  Selecting fourth gear stalls your engine, is that at idle speed or light throttle?  I did not quite understand when you mention the "quotes" when you engage 4th gear, please clearify.

Checking the engine and gearbox joins, is there any substancial material poking out of the little hole?  Is there any burning smell in that area?  Drain the gearbox oil, is there any metal fragments dis-charged towards the end of oil drain, pan the oil and look for debris at the base of the oil pan.  Obviously, you will need to replenish with fresh oil.

If your gearbox, has been built 25,000 miles ago, the reconditioner might, as a goodwill gesture repair the box if it is at fault.  Is the box still under warranty?  Do you get a positive feel in engaging the gears?

Need more input......
