Hi there, as the title says, do i have to take of the rear drive shaft to just replace the speedo cable?? this is nuts.. :D im used to toyota 4x4, and you can be blind, dumb, drunk and missing both thumbs and still just unscrew the nut for the speedo cable from the transfer box.. am i missing something here??

reason i ask is that my gw was registered as a 10 seater bus when it was new, thanks to regulations it had to have a secondary "tamperproof" odometer connected with a tee connector.. i have removed the bus odometer now, and want to connect my speedo cable directly to the transfer as god intended...

Hi Rune,

I would have thought the speedo drive would be obviously visible on the transfer box.

Though, you have a tacho fitted; does not this set up give a speedo reading anyway?

You have mentioned a split drive; I would imagine one drives the tacho and the other to drives the standard speedo.

Surely, the split drive taps into the original transfer box speedo drive point. Will not your speedo drive attach at that same point?

Slightly puzzled......

hi pistonhead. sorry if i was unclear. but i know where the speedo cable is connected on the transfer(rear of the trasfer, just above the ougoing shaft to the rear axle). but it is inaccessible cause of the rear drive shaft. wondered if anybody had i tip or trick to get it off/on without taking down the drive shaft..

Hmm, still confused.

The speedo drive is normally quite accessible and does not require propshaft removal.

see link:

/sites/default/files/files/Doc1(2).pdf

You will see item 10 to which the speedo drive is connected. The propshaft. does not need removing.

UNLESS, as yours is a Diesel; some Diesels have a harmonic balancer fitted, this could be in he way in which case the propshaft. and balancer needs to come off.

Any photos you can post of this area?

Hi

I have a 1985 300gd. I have a brand new speedo cable ready to go in but as you say the only way I can see, or my garage can, is to start dismantling the drive train. There is no access from above so as you say not something you can do without major work.

My gearbox was playing up and we decided to do the cable a the same time. Needless to say the leak on the box stopped so still waiting to fit the cable. The mechanics said it would be taking a liberty to charge the labour just to change it.

So your right. Not an easy fix as far as I can tell
